Correct color for ACES II in A-10?

So, in doing some research on colors, I’m seeing the ACES II ejection seat in both an overall gray color, and an overall black. Is there a reason for the different colors? Say, newer versions being gray instead of black, or vice versa? So far the pics I’ve seen show both a gray and a black seat installed in the A-10, and I’m wondering which is the most accurate.

Working on the old Tamiya 1/48 A-10A, if that matters.

Thanks!

Chris

I am pretty sure that Black will be the newer color. Gray has been the standard color in US cockpits since the 1950s, but in the 1990s when many aircraft (including the A-10) were modified for night flying use with Night Vision Goggles, black was introduced (as well as new NVG compatable lighting for instruments). This was mainly done to cut down on glare and replection. NVGs amplify available light and standard cockpit lighting on a gray surface would look like floodlights thru NVGs. If your A-10 is going to be in the Charcoal Lizard/Europe I, or original MASK A-10A scheme, use Dark Gull Gray, if it is gonna be in the Ghost Gray schemes currently seen, use black.

Thank you, sir! I was leaning toward black anyway just to get a bit more contrast with the overall ghost gray scheme I’m doing.

Try this, the USAF Museum example:

The seats for the A-10 are light ghost grey and the Aces II seats for the F-15’s are black.

Thanks for that info…recently bought a monogram 1/48 A-10 at a show for 5 bucks. Then I bought the verlinden update kit(#0525)… Holy Crap Batman. More than a little intimidating…That one may have to wait a while. Good luck with yours Chris

Looks like a combination of Black and Gray (Dark Gull Gray, not Light Ghost Gray- compare it to the Ghost Gray exterior) on the current A-10

and all Dark Gull Gray on the older A-10A

Excellent pics Stik, gonna be a big help once I start my A-10 Thanks

Dave

I am glad that those will help you.
