I was curious as to whether or not I could use a cordless drill like a dremal rotary tool. With the chucks micro-mark sells is it entirely possible for me to do this? How about practical?
I use mine once in a while for drilling, but they don’t get up to the high speeds that Dremels do for some things that rquire that. And they can be a little clumsy for close in work.
If you have an electric screwdriver (common among computer hardware types) you can get several different chucks to hold drills up to about 1/4 inch and down to No. 80 wire. The screwdriver is less clumsy than a cordless drill—not much bigger than a hand held motor tool like a Dremel. I have a small cordless drill, an electric screwdriver, and a Foredom on the bench. Know what I use most for drilling?
My fingers and a pin vise.
Power tools allow you to screw up a project far faster and more efficiently than you could ever do it by hand. [#oops]
[#ditto] I don’t know for what particular job you need a rotary tool but I personnally think that you’dd better do it by hand. It’s longer but safer. Specially with plastic, High speed can melt the plastic rather than drill.
Depending on what you need to do with it, they can work. They are clumsy due to their size. I do use mine quite often for straight drilling and as a lathe at times for turning small parts. I find I have more control with my Dremel though.
You can get one of these for your drill: http://www.generaltools.com/product.asp?action=prdupc&prid=34§ionid=2
Do a search online for ‘drill flex shaft’.

I was thinking in using it for sanding, especially hard to reach places.
It could work if you use it at slow speed. Otherwise, plastic will melt because of the heat. Be very carefull and it may be easier to set the drill fixed on the counter and move to part on the tip than holding the big drill in your hand trying to reach small areas. Practice on other plastic parts to get a feel of it.
Hand = quality & percsion
dremel tool = speed, large jobs, rough work
cordless drill = someone messed something up pritty bad somewhere.
