Completed my 2nd Airliner! (kind of) - Delta L-100-10 Conversion (WIP)

Hey everyone! I just realized I never started a build log for this project! This is a part of the Retro Airliners GB that I’m running here. I know the C-130H is technically strategic airlift, but the end product will be civilian. Anyways, the C-130 has been one of my favorite aircraft for years now. I used to see ANG J-models from the 129th RQW at Moffett flying over my school at least 2-3 times a week. I also really love airliners, so I thought, what if I made an L-100? The best of both worlds! If you aren’t familiar with the L-100, it is the civilian conversion for the C-130 based off of the E model. Delta adopted the L-100 in the 60s (I think, citation needed). They later converted their 3 airframes to the -20 model, which extended the aircraft around 9 feet. These -20s weren’t fitted with the underwing tanks. The biggest visual difference between the L-100s and the C-130s (asides from bright colored liveries) were the absence of windows underneath the main cockpit on the left and right sides.

The base kit is the C-130H from Hasegawa. It’s an older model from 1987, but it still works pretty well fit wise. Converting it to the L-100 required minor work, primarily filling the lower windows with putty and also filling in some scribing for the door on the right side. Asides from that, everything is practically going to be the same. I’ll be using decals from Draw for their Delta L-100-10s.

Here’s most of the aircraft put together with the exception of some minor bits and bobs like rigging posts, propellers and landing gear.

Let me know what you think!

Hey everyone, I finished assembly, and have started to clean the parts for painting. I am now struggling a little with some color references on my L-100 wings.

I have only one really good photo of the color patterns on the wings, which is this one.

I think the engines are aluminum. The leading edge is a lighter gray that I don’t think is metallic. My main problem is determining what the engine nacelle thingy connecting to the wing is. Is that the same color as the back color of the wing? Wingtips look to be a lighter winter grey. But yeah, I would appreciate help if anyone has any other color references for the wing or can confirm what I see! Thanks in advance! Happy modeling

Did priming in white, fixed all the funky dents, and now I did the aluminum layer.

Here’s where I got today. Finished masking and painting the core colors of the fuselage. Onto masking the propellers and other bits and pieces like external fuel tanks and landing gear bogies.

I just finished the project today! Did the decals, detail painting, and clear coat! Made a simple base with wood from Michaels. I designed the nameplate in Google slides lol and printed on photo paper.

I’m so incredibly pleased with how this one came out! I love civilian subjects, and this was a neat and somewhat rare subject!

Let me know what you guys think!

I like all Hercs, but very nice to see one in civilian use. Well done.

NWAN, that Hercules looks amazing! Like Frozin, I’ve never seen a Hercules in civilian livery either and I must say, “I Love It!!” Your natural metal and glossy white colors are so “slick”& smooth. I’d love to see this scheme done to a “Herc” in a larger scale.

thanks @MR_TOM_SCHRY! I would love to do a larger C-130 one day maybe in the Lynden or Alaska Gold Nugget livery! I don’t think I have the skills yet, so I’ll work up to them. Building Gundam is so much different than airliners, but I think it’s super refreshing!

That’s a neat little model, and in markings we don’t see every day! Well done, and congratulations on being the first to take the “finished” apron! You are cleared to taxi out to the runway and take off for your victory lap! :grinning:

I did not know of the L-100, I have to look into this more. I have a second C-130 model in the stash. hmmm…

Nice! Just make sure that your C-130 is either the E or the H variant! Otherwise the decals might be too short. I almost bought the wrong size aircraft haha.
