Okay, I lied; it’s not completed, but I had to get close to finish in order to start my Warhawk group build plane. The Ultracast resin seat, and thus the gunsite, have yet to be installed. I received the seat late in the build and haven’t had a chance to paint and finish it yet (thus the closed canopy). I’m also flirting with the idea of doing brake lines and antenna wire, but haven’t decided yet.
These are the markings of Andrew J. Reynolds’ P-40E of the 49th FG. Reynolds was a double ace in the P-40 (although some sources list his confirmed total as 9.33). This is supposed to be how his plane looked in late April, 1942, when he had 7 victories, while defending Darwin, Australia.
Hope you enjoy, and thanks for looking. I’m still working on both my modeling and photography skills, and I wish I could get better pics. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome!
This is the AMtech kit; I’ve built several and really like how they go together. The only real problem is the fit of the cowl panels. I had to use some sheet sytene to make one side flush with the nose, and there was some gap filling glue and rescribing for other areas. It’s not as detailed or accurate a kit than the Hasegawa (which I haven’t built), but it looks like a P-40 to me!
I’ve never built an Am Tech kit. It seems like all the manufacturers can’t seem to get the fit around he cowling down. Trumpeter, Monogram,AmTech, Revell all seem to have issues. I don’t know about the Hasegawa release.
I haven’t built the Trumpeter kit either. It seems most every P-40 kit, even the Hasegawa due to the way its designed, have issues of some sort. Guess you just have to choose your battles!
Darren, A6E fan, Mark, Rick, and Steve, thanks for the kind words too!
