Complete - Tamiya Bf 109 E-3

Despite having many 109s in my stash, this is the first one I’ve built since I came back to the hobby. I built one of them many years ago and it has since been destroyed. I held off on building one because I didn’t feel comfortable painting the mottling, but I think I’m ready to tackle it. I’ll be using aftermarket decals since there weren’t any decals in the box when I bought it at a show (well, there were decals in the box, but there were for a Hs 129). I’ll be building White 7 of 1./JG51. In doing some research, the plain had a forced landing on the French coast after combat over England during the Battle of Britain.

Here’s the office. It’s mostly OOB with the exception of some PE seatbelts, and some added wiring. Any comments/critiques are welcome.

Great start Bob. I built their 72nd version a few months back, great kit i just hope your decals are better than mine were.

Awesome start! Looking forward to the mottling of the 109.

Your friend, Toshi

I’ll be watching

I’m in. Nice start on that pit!

Thanks guys! I’ve had hit and miss results with Tamiya’s decals. Hopefully these aftermarket ones will be a hit.

The cockpit is looking great. I’ll be watching to see how the rest builds up. But I ain’t worried.

I have one of these in my display cabinet that I built around 10 years ago, as part of the first ever Secret Santa Group Build. It’s a nice, simple kit. Should go together very easy, so you can focus on the important part… the paint!

Looks great so far Tamiya kits always build up nice

Thanks guys! I’ve gotten the fuselage together and the wings together. Just some light sanding to do before I put them together. I test fit the wings and there’s just a tiny gap at the wing roots, but some tape will help close them and give the proper dihedral to the wings. It’s nice to have a simple build every once in awhile.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been a month since I posted on this…too much real life getting in the way.

I finished painting, and overall I’m pretty happy with it. This is my first attempt at mottling and I made a few mistakes, but most of them will be covered up by decals and weathering. Any comments/critiques are welcome.

I think you did a mighty fine job for your first go at it! The more you do it, the more comfortable you will be with your airbrush. I used to practice on card stock and styrofoam cups until I found a technique I was comfortable with.

Thanks Chad! I think my problem was that I had the pressure set too high. Towards the end of my painting session I was also having issues with water coming out of the airbrush. Being almost done, my frustration got the best of me and I just wanted to finish. Learned more for next time though.

Looks great to me the trick is low psi, very thin paint and practice. As I was doing my bf110 towards the end I started getting a cramp in my hand, I was unknowingly having a death grip on my airbrush. So the last trick is to relax.

Thanks for the tip Clint! I was having some hand cramps as well and I rushed it against my better judgement.

Decals are on and so is the panel line wash. The decals were great, I love Aeromaster. A little bit of Micro Sol and they settled into the panel lines. The wash is a thin mix of black and burnt umber acrylic paints.

Looks like a nice clean build so far!

Nice!

Looks great that’s some very cool markings really liking the blue.

Bob,

Looks really well done so far.

Looking at your bio it seems you’ve done your stint in our armed forces. (I was 4F either fortunately or unfortunately depending on how one looks at it [:|]) I can tell you from my experience that I think, if you’re doing your current job well and really care about making a difference, it’s one of the toughest jobs out there. I hope all teachers will someday soon realize the compensation for their work that they deserve - and it’s a lot more than what they’re getting now!
