You’ve got a great start there on that classic Monogram kit! It still holds up well, around 50 years after it was first issued. It’s one of my favorites.
No worries! I’m a Monogram fan, and a member of the Monogram Mafia here in the forum. So I’ll toot their horn as appropriate [;)]
Yeah, Revell, did their P-51B in 1/32, but in 1/48, they only ever released a P-51D. And that kit never saw the light of day again, after the companies were merged in '86. This kit, though, the Monogram P-51B, was reworked for the ProModeler catalog by replacing the raised panel lines with scribed lines.
I like it because it’s relatively simple to build and you can have a nice-looking Mustang when you’re done. I don’t refuse to build other companies’ versions-the Tamiya kit is very nice indeed. But this one has a place in my heart.
I hope you build more of them and share them with us!
Next up is the wings. The ports for the machine guns are just holes so I figure I need to put something in there. At first I thought I could use some sprue and drill some holes in the ends, but the sprues were too thick. Then I remembered I had some spare flash supressors from a Monogram P-38.
So I got quite a bit of painting done before the new school year starts. The masking for the invasion stripes isn’t perfect, but I like the way it looks since they weren’t perfect in 1944 either
The spinner gave me a little trouble at first, but I think the second attempt looks all right to me
It was pointed out to me that if the invasion stripes weren’t on the top of the fuselage, then they shouldn’t be on the top wings either. I spent some time fixing that before decals and panel line wash. Some of the decals gave me some trouble, especially the checkerboard around the nose and “Pappy’s Answer” which shattered on the model. A bit of patience got most of it back together and I painted what couldn’t be repaired.
Here are the finished pics. Overall a nice kit, I didn’t really have any issues that weren’t of my own making. I raided a Hasegawa kit for the bombs. Any comments/cirtiques are welcome.
