Colors for Navy aggressor aircraft

Hi guys!

I picked up Dragon’s 1/144 scale F-5E. I love these little kits! Anyway, the instructions call for three colors for the three-tone grey camo. They’re calling for dark and light ghost grey (FS 36320 & 36375 respectively). However, their third grey is listed as “smoke grey” with a Model Master ref # of 1415. If you look up #1415 on the 'net, that number is for “burnt metal” buffing metalizer. Am I missing something here? Can this be correct?

Can anyone tell me what the FS numbers should be for a Navy aggressor F-5E?

Thanks!

Eric

Here’s what I found for Aggressor aircraft… F-5s are about halfway down…

http://users.skynet.be/exotic.planes/htm/other/schemes.htm

Testor’s MM numbers that start with “14” are metallics… Colors start with “17”. Dunno what to tell you about those instructions…

Hans, could it just be a typo of “1715”? Not sure what colour that would be…

LOL! I just looked it up. Model Master 1715 is “Interior Green”! I think we can officially rule the Dragon instructions as being incorrect.

Thank you, Hans, for the info! After I hit the “Post” button, I’m going to check out the link.

Best wishes,

Eric

Ahh well we tried to give them the benefit of the doubt - guess they just completely missed that one!

Howdy Eric,

If I am not mistaken, aren’t those marking from VFC-111 “Sundowners”? If so, the colours would be FS 36495(Lt Gray), 36375(Lt ghost gray) & 35237(Medium gray)

Hope this helps my friend…

MIKE!!! You’re a lifesaver!!! Yes that’s exactly it. I really wanted to stop off at HobbyTown yesterday and pick up the paints that I needed. I already have the light grey. I knew I needed the light ghost grey but I didn’t know what that third color was. Now I can finish this awesome little (and at 1/144 scale, it is little!) gem of a kit.

I heard that Revell/Monogram is supposed to be coming out with a 1/48 scale kit in these same markings. Me want! Me want! For some reason, I really love that “Sundowner and sharkmouth” motif. I need to work on my F-4 Phantom with the same markings.

Thanks again Mike!

Eric

Howdy Eric,

Haha you are most welcome my friend…!! I am glad that I was able to help you out… I love researching so I figured why not…

Oooo really, I’d like to see Monogram’s F-5 re popped as well. However AFV Club yes the ones who do the military vehicles has stepped into the aircraft line…

And guess what, the first a/c they did is the F-5E/F-5N and in 1/48th… Kit #AR48101 is the one you want… They give you four schemes from VFC-111 and one of them is like the one I posted, the full color tail art.

Kit# AR48102 is the Air Force variant of the F-5E… The price is a bit more around $45-49 range but the kit all around is rock solid and the detailing is between the likes of Hasegawa and Tamiya…

I have a couple of these kits in my stash and they are worth every penny IMHO… I also included a few pix of an F-5N from VFC-13 that I had taken while in Michigan last year.

This ship is in the same exact colours as VFC-111’s flag jet…

Do apologize for the photo quality, my new scanner crapped on me so I used my digital camera… Actual photos are more vivid then these…Fun joy.

Don’t mean to steal a thread, sorry, but when did VF-111 become VFC-111? I left Miramar before the fighters headed east, and we turned the base over to the buzzard, ball and hook bunch.

Howdy Disco,

First off, I wont tell anyone that you stole the thread if you dont[whstl] Mmmm if my memory serves me correctly, the last a/c to fly with VF-111 was the Tomcat when the squadron was disestablished in 1995.

Now with initial start of VFC-111 I am not sure of but it was made official back in November of 06. The only thing that VF-111 & VFC-111 share is the tail markings minus the “AF” code.

VFC-111’s are ex Swedish F-5’s modified and the Navy began to purchase them for the Aggressor role back in mid 2000.

Hopefully this helps you my friend…!! And now it’s my turn to steal the thread(ssshhhh) but would you have any pix while you were stationed @ Miramar?

Again, Mike, I really do appreciate the paint info AND the pictures. [:)]

I saw that AFV came out with the F-5E in those same markings. Believe me, I’ve been drooling over it. But then I saw that Revell AG is coming out, or actually HAS come out with their version of it. In fact, yesterday I contacted my guy over at my LHS and he’s got it on order for me right now. From what I’ve seen on the internet, the cost from Revell will be around the $25 - $30 mark. To be honest with you, the price, for me, was the driving factor. That and my great fondness for Revellogram kits. [:P]

Best wishes,

Eric

Howdy,

Glad I could help Eric…!!! I drooled over it when she first came into my LHS as well… I was able to do ot at the bridge so I decided to spend a bit on my son and myself so… Rarely do that but it felt good[;)]

Now for the Revellogram, was that the single or two seat version? Looking forward to seeing your tiny F-5…!!

Take care

Thanks Mike!

Today after work I will FINALLY have the time to stop off at the hobby shop. I’ve been keeping a Post-It note in my car with the correct colors written down so that I’ll be ready once I get the time. So today I’ll pick up the paints and, with a little luck, I’ll have the plane painted by the weekend.

And you’re right! It is a tiny plane! I’m debating if I should hand paint it or break out the airbrush and Silly Putty. Well, the kit came with two planes so you can make a single seater and a dual seater. Maybe I’ll try one method on one and the other on the second plane.

Also, the Revellogram kit is, I believe, the single seat variant. I can’t help but wonder if it’s not a reboxing of their old kit which I remember building in the '80s.

Eric

Did you check Don Color out?

get to US Navy and thee are Aggressor colors.
