need info on the different colors on 88 shells. Im building dragons 88 flak 36 and it comes with brass shells but it doesnt tell you what the different colors are for some are to be yellow tipped etc.
HE rounds are yellow with black lettering and a silver-colored fuse (bare steel). AP rounds are black with red lettering and a white fuse. There are minor variations depending on the date of manufacture, but this should be close enough. I’ve got some photos somewhere, if I can find them. [%-)]
There were also time-fused HE rounds, don’t know that I’ve seen one though. Don’t know if Flak crews were ever issued HEAT rounds either, but they are black and white with a silver fuse and black and white lettering…oops…and smoke shells too. Ah…green…I believe? Going to have to look that one up…
Let us know how the build goes, I have the same kit sitting on the shelf that I need to build… but first I need to finish my Sherman… and Willys Jeep
Does the coloring convention used on the 88mm rounds carry over to the other calibers? Stated differently, was it a universal color code across all calibers of German munitions?
Generally speaking, yes. I have some photos that claim to be HE rounds, but they have black projectiles and silver fuses. I think they are mislabeled. I have a site that shows photos of various ammunition, I’ll see if I can find it and post it.

OK, line drawings…and the text is in Russian, but I think you can figure out what most things are by looking at them.
You can wade through this site too, but I don’t think he does a very good job identifying everything.
Thanks, Kykeon- that site makes painting rounds a breeze.
