Color of paint below waterline on the Pourquoi Pas?

Not that I need more kits in my stash but something overpowered my fiscal judgement a week or so ago and I ordered and have received the Zvezda (née Heller) 1/100 Pourquoi Pas?

In my cursory, preliminary research I can’t find the color used for the lower hull on that ship. Does anyone know? If not it’s not a big deal - I have more research to do and may find it yet. If I don’t I’ll just go with red - or maybe even attempt a waterline cut.

P.S. The Zvezda instructions call for “Scarlett” (Humbrol) so it looks like they think it’s supposed to be red.

Floquil/PollyScale Southern Pacific Railroad Scarlett is a pretty good choice for a hull red

Yes, I know that Floquil/PollyScale is OOP. Use your favorite paint conversion table to get to your referred brand.

SP Scarlett is more of a subdued red, not a bright in-your-face insignia red. It is not an orangy red such as many red primers, nor is it a ‘boxcar’ reddish brown color.

Period photos, being in black and white, are little help. However a painting does show a hint of red at the bow.

Thanks Ed.

Red it is. I may tone down the red that appears in the painting you included in your post. It’ll probably be close to the red colors I’ve always mixed up for the battlewagons’ hulls I’ve painted.

The upper hull was painted black between 1912 and 1918 while she was a training ship in the French navy. At all other times, as a research vessel, it would seem the upper hull was white.

My research, so far, is limited to just a handfull of sites I’ve found on the Internet but, given that I’ll not be spending more than 9 months on the kit when I get around to building her, that’ll do.

Here’s an interesting site for anyone with this kit:

It would help if I spoke French in order to understand more of the video. The main text’s gist can be understood adequately using Google Translate.
