?color of canvas on modern US Army 5 ton trucks (NATO)

Hi guys. Can someone help me with the proper canvas color for trucks wearing the NATO scheme? I was under the impression that canvas was a single color until I saw stateside stationed vehicles with their canvas tops wearing the NATO colors.

Mike

Some of the newer vehicles have canvas made from vinyl with the NATO scheme printed in the vinyl. The canvas comes in various shades, the older forest green canvas that can fade to any number of shades, the newer vinyl 3-color and a desert sand vinyl for vehicles that are painted tan.

The desert sand color starting appearing in the early 90s (after Desert Storm), the newer 3-color canvas can in use in the late 90s-early 00s.

EDIT: I should also add that I have seen white vinyl canvas for winter camouflaged vehicles, but I think they may also be used vehicles we paint white in support of UN operations.

Here are some links that show what’s available and in what colors. The earliest one is from 2000 regarding camouflaged HMMWV soft tops.

Great. Thank you Rob. Another question. The Italeri kit I am working on has what appears to be wood planking in the cargo bed. Can this be correct? I am thinking it should be steel.

Mike

Its been a bit but as I remember they are steel beds. If it is going to be visable, you need to change it.

Rounds Complete!!

As he states, the beds are steel. I have photos of the 900 series trucks and you can see the rusted beds. http://gallery.kitmaker.net/showgallery.php/cat/17149

I concur with Redleg and Sabot. The bed of all M900 series 5-ton trucks are metal. Italeri got that part wrong. To fix it, either sand off the wood grain, or cover the floor with 0.010 sheet styrene. It should also have a seem don the center running the full length of the bed. It is made by welding 2 pieces of sheet steel together.

Thanks for that. I really didn’t think the truck bed would be wood but just needed to know for sure.
