I am trying to find a color match for Green Zinc Chromate. I am trying to airbrush a Klingon Bird of Prey, and the hull color most people recommend is Green Zinc Chromate, but I only spray acrylics. Does ANYONE know a formula to blend Tamiya colors to match this?
I am still pretty new to airbrushing, and color matching is not my strong point. I posted this in the sci-fi secton, and got almost no response, so ANY help will be greatly appreciated!
I’ll put this out there, BUT with a caveat that i could be way off mark - if so, i hope somebody with better knowledge will step in…
Gunze Sangyo make a colour called Interior Green. I’m fairly certain that it’s a close match to Green Zinc Chromate. I can’t remember the no. code, I think it’s H50something…
I’ve seen instructions which call for Green Zinc Chromate, then give the equivalent Gunze Sangyo colour as Interior Green.
However, I can’t be 100% and hopefully somebody out there will help, but i thought i’d just let you know. I know Gunze are hard to get in the US now, but if you find some, might be worth checking out.
Unfortunately, i’m not familiar enough with Tamiya to assist on that front.
Model Master/Testor makes the Green Zinc Chromate (#4852) in an acrylic. It’s the 1/2 oz bottle and you should be able to snatch it up at your local Hobby Town or wherever for around $2.99 a bottle!! Good luck!!!
Although they are both zinc primers, “interior green” and “green zinc chromate” aren’t really interchangable colors. While what is commonly referred to as interior green leans toward the olive side, green zinc chromate is closer to the color of guacamole. Both of these colors are available in the MM line of paints. I don’t know too much about sci-fi subjects but IIRC, interior green may be what you are looking for.
Hi Chris, perhaps this will work for you. In my Tamiya 1:48 Corsair F4U-1D instructions they advise the following for what I would think of as green zinc chromate. Mix Tamiya XF-3:2+ (Flat Yellow) to XF-5:1 (Flat Green); (that is XF-3 and XF-5 together 2:1). Hope this helps.
Why not do it the same way they got green zinc chromate - mix black and yellow. Simply add a few drops of black at a time to the yellow until you get the color you want.
Agreed; yellow + black will basically give you increasingly olive coloration. Just add white if too dark. Also, if you don’t want to mix, you can use some other types of acrylic paints out there.
