Cobra King Story

An interesting story from my past and a build to remember it. This is a “replica” of the tank that was outside the 2/81 Armored Battalion Headquarters building when I was stationed in Germany in 1979.

The picture of the WWII “Cobra King” tank with our Battalion Commanding Officer standing in front was taken by my Army buddy while I was standing in an awards ceremony formation.

Didn’t know it at the time, but it was the first tank to enter Bastogne in relief of the American 101st Airborne Division that had been surrounded by the German army during WWII from December 16th until December 26 when the “Cobra King” tank broke through.

I tried to replicate some of the battle damage on the front of the tank. It was the first time I have attempted something like this, and I think it turned out OK. It was fun to try.

Nice project! Interesting to see an upgunned Jumbo that has the muzzle brake installed.

Nice job - and what a cool story.

Apparently they added the new gun when they did some major work after some major battle damage. That’s what I read anyway. I used this aftermarket gun as the kit came with the standard issue Sheridan gun. Had a good experience with the manufacturer after breaking the original muzzle brake (my fault). I did not realize the 3D printed part would be so brittle and I broke it into so many pieces I couldn’t even find them all. I contacted Ryefield Model and then not only sent me a replacement at no charge, they sent two just in case! I was quite pleased and surprised.
