Is there a FS number listed for the orange/red color used on the HH-65? I could also go with a good match on a recommendation also.
The color is called Tangerine and has no FS # match. Testors Model Master Chevy Engine Red is an almost perfect match for it.
Is tangerine the orange color or the red/orange color?
I’ve heard that the Chevy engine red was a close match and was going to get some today to try but I’m still here at home.
Let me know if the Chevy engine red is a close match, I have been waiting to build a Coast Guard ever since I photographed one at the Dayton International Air Show a few years ago.
The Chevy Engine Red is for the Tangerine color on the MH-65s.
The Orange as as seen on the stripe on ships and the standard orange/white scheme on MH-60J Jay Hawks and other aircraft is International Orange, FS12197.
Thanks, I’m a Ford guy so I don’t have any of that color on hand and still didn’t get out of the house. I’ll see what Tomorrow brings.
International Orange (12797) is the wrong shade for CG red (12799).

When did the Coast Guard adopt the “slash” for its cutters, boats, and aircraft?
The design consists of a wide red bar forward of a narrow blue bar both canted at 64 degrees above the horizontal with the Coast Guard emblem superimposed. It was originally recommended in 1964 by the industrial design firm of Raymond Loewy/William Snaith, Incorporated and was adopted service-wide on 6 April 1967.
The color red used in the slash is Pantone 179.
The color blue used in the slash is Pantone 307
From the USCG Color and Coatings Manual:
Coast Guard Diagonal Stripes. The diagonal stripes are to be painted red (12199), white (17925),
and blue (15182).
The USCG Color and Coating Manual was updated in the year 200’ That update replaced white (17875) with white (17925). White (19925) is a pure white; while white (17875) has a slight gray tinge.

Great info, but as far as I know, there is no Red, FS12199, in model colors. The International Orange, FS12197, is almost an exact match and is the closest you will find in model colors.
During my time in the service, I compared Red (12199) fresh from the paint can and applied to aluminum and steel boat hulls with various model paint test swatches. Model Master Chevy Engine Red is a closer match for Red 12199 than International Orange (12197).
The International Orange looks correct to me in 1/35 scale.
And on the actual aircraft.
This month’s FSM actually suggests mixing the two at about 1:1. I have one of these in my stash, so if anyone does try mixing, please let us know!

If you go back on these helicopter pages to January 16, 2012, you’ll see my USCG HH-65c photos. It’s 1:48 scale and I superdetailed the Trumpeter kit. It was painted with Tamiya rattle can Gloss Orange, sprayed over Tamiya gray primer. For me it’s a fast, easy way to paint the model, if you look at the photos, perhaps you’ll agree. I bought the MM chevy engine red but have not tested it at all. I just notice that on the Badger Airbrush site that they have Coast Guard Red (16-403) and Coast Guard Orange (16-404) listed in their Modelflex paint line.
I didn’t even know Badger made/sold paint. Who knew?
I didn’t know till today when I was checking their catalog on line. They have a bunch different kinds of things from temp tattoo templates and paint to finger nail paint to model paint.

The closest you’ll get is Testors Intl Red Orange. Arty, great looking 60! You do us Flight Mechs proud. Two gentlemen in the door are AMT2 James Nelson and AST2 Jeremiah Loser. I see a couple of things to Nit pick, but only because I work on them everyday. I won’t so it on the public forum so if You’re interested send me a messsage.
The chevy engine red I bought just simply looked red. The orange paint I use to paint real engines looks close but I think its closer to what I se on a 60. I still feel the 65 has a different color than the 60.
Believe it or not, it looks different because on the H-65 orange is the dominate color. On the H-60 orange is the stripe. Out of ATC Mobile, all airframes (HU-25, HH-65, HH-60, HC-144) all shared the same paint shed. So all the colors are uniform, maybe just distorted due to size application and scale.
