Clay Lacy

Last one up, the first I did of the series; the Clay Lacy Aviation Mustang. Like the others it is the Airfix 1:72 Mustang.

Painted in Vallejo Model Color Magenta, thinned for airbrushing with their thinner and flow improver. And like the others the decals are by Draw.

I have several more Mustangs sitting on the bench in various states of completion. But no more photos for now.

Eye-catching seems a bit of an understatement! I think that is one nice Mustang, Ed. [Y][Y]

I wasn’t familiar with Clay Lacy, but after some reading I am now. [:)]

Clay Lacy’s Mustang appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. back in the '80s. Seems that in the episode, the Mustang chased down a Lear Jet and forced it to land.

Another nice MUstang.

The reason for the color of that Mustang is that they ordered a gallon or so but there was a decimal place mix up and a very large amount was delivered. It had to go somewhere and Lacy’s P-51 got the nod. It may be a shade of magenta but most people call it purple.

I have an R/C Mustang I did in that scheme.

Hmmmm;

When I worked for International Plastics as a supervisor( They Made HouseHold Decorating Chotskes) They were making transparent resin Grape bunches for a table Centerpiece. Someone made a mistake in the color mix of a Batch of over a thousand pours.( Each Grape was an individual piece.)

Imagine that color in Transparent Resin! One of the line ladies from Portugal coined the new color name, Which, By the way proved very Popular. She called it Majurple! We were stuck with, Thankfully orders for over thirty thousand of them grapes( We only Put together the bunches for local stores!)

Shortest job I ever had. I developed a very High sensitivity to the resin in the raw state. Before hardening! 16 Weeks!

Oh MY!

I certainly feel for the Pilots! That’s a tricky maneuver! Why did the passenger have to go outside? Oh, He wanted to!

To smoke.

Lacy is driving an old JAL DC-8.

Bill

Clay Lacy is an interesting character, totally aviation business driven. Remarkable history:

Retired as the #1 seniority list pilot at United.

Set a round the world time record with a 747-SP.

Owns a charter jet service with more than one base of operations.

Lived in a community North of Los Angeles, with a runway and houses with hangars. Owned a Lear Jet for commuting to/from home and businesses.

I thought of his “Human Fly” DC-8 stunt as rather a low point in his otherwise really interesting career, just that, a stunt.

Love it. Looks great!

Love racing planes. I’ve modeled several. Even saw National Air Race when I was a kid. Wish there were more kits of the small engine class.
