Classic Airframes kits?

What’s the quality & accuracy like?

The older the kits, the more ‘limited’ run they are, that is no locating pins, fits issues, some flash, major sanding to fit the resin parts. Takes extra skill, but interesting subjects.

They always look great in the box, but are very difficult builds. Typical of short run kits, they are not beginners kits. Some of their recent releases are much better than their older ones, but still challenging. Biggest problem I’ve encountered is the fit of the resin parts with the injected plastic. In several of the kits it’s near impossible because the resin parts are too large to fit. This is a particular problem with the wheel bays fit into the wings. As far as accuracy, they range from great to not so great, so it depends on which aircraft you want to model. That said, they do offer aircraft not likely to be kitted by any of the main stream guys. With a lot of very careful assembly, lots of dry fitting & trimming to improve fit, they can be built into very nice models.

I’ve got the Gloster E28/39 in 1/48th scale, and there are a few fit issues, confusion over parts placement, and some inaccuracies, such as a missing air scoop and undercarriage that’s a little long in the leg. The lack of locator pins can be a two edged sword, allowing you a bit of leaway with fit, but to the less experienced builder (me), it can be an odd experience.

I think they’re great mainly for the subject matter and there’s alot of satifaction in pulling one of these off well. I’ve built the Fairey Battle TT and the Defiant mk.II, I have the D.XXI, He-112, Ms. 406, Mig-3, Whirlwind and Supermarine Walrus all waiting to go, I’ve also been keeping an eye out for their Blenheim and Hudson as if I don’t have enough work ahead.

Their SBC-3 hsa been referred to as “the kit from hell”.

Personally I would stick with Accurate Minitures.
