Civil aviation GB?

Several years ago when I first found this site, there was a civil air GB that died a horrible death.

Anyone want to give it another try?

I was thinking of making it very broad basically open to any scheduled transport or general aviation (including non-military marked warbirds in civilian service).

Wikipedia defines scheduled transport as all passenger and cargo flights operating on regularly-scheduled routes (airlines and cargo services), and General aviation as any flight other than a military or scheduled airline flight.

To attract fence sitters I would allow government run rescue / emergency services aircraft including Coast Guard or Military rescue aircraft IF they use a brightly colored scheme (so no, an armed MH-60 full of PJ’s would not be appropriate). Research oriented X-planes would also be acceptable on a case by case basis (NASA aircraft would be fine as they are a civilian agency).

Just to spark some interest here is a list of possibilities I came up with

Obviously airlines of all types would be available

General aviation is a wide open area that includes

Airships (blimps & zeppelins)

Gliders

Aerobatics aircraft

Air ambulances

Aerial photography and survey aircraft

Traffic reporting

Crop dusters

Bush planes

Charter services

Private / corporate jets

Law enforcement

Firefighting aircraft

Logging aircraft

Exploration

Stunt / record breakers

Racing aircraft

and of course privately owned aircraft

I was looking for significant dates for a start and finish, strangely (at least to me) most major aviation events have occured in Nov-Dec, not a time of year I would think flyers would be trying something new. However I did finally find some dates that should work.

March 5th, 2007 is the 60th anniversary of the ratification of the International Civil Aviation Organization (the UN organization that encourages the safe and organized development of civil air transport). March 3rd, 1915 was the founding of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). NACA was replaced by NASA in 1958.

December 17 was the first flight of the Wright Brothers flyer in 1903, it was also the first flight of the DC3 32 years later, as both these events are rather important to civil aviation it seems an appropriate end date.

So I was thinking about a start date of March 3rd or 5th, 2007 (depending on which group people feel is more appropriate), and an end date of Dec 17, 2007.

Non fixed wing aircraft (helicopters, blimps, ballons etc) are welcome as are all varieties of fixed wing aircraft.

So any interest?

I’m interested, don’t know what I would build yet.

Mmmmm? By chance I’m working on a Falcon 10- 1:48 RoG (ex Hasegawa)right now. I’m in with something civy, have a few in the stash. This bird will be done soon hopefuly if all goes well. I’m puting a wild paint scheme on it with no decals, all tape and paint[:O] Count me in. [8D] Mike

I’m interested, maybe a Hughes H-1B racer?

I’m in with a L1011. I want to do an RB211 powered aircraft.

Count me in. Shall we start up a thread in the Group Build section?

Good there are a few interested.

I’m probably looking at starting with either a Pioneer 1/72 Beech 18 (C-45), I’ve never heard of the brand, assuming its a reboxed PM or Hobbycraft kit. I may do a 1/72 DHC-6 Twin Otter if the Twin Beech looks like too much of a headache (the reviews I’ve seen are not encouraging).

I’ve never run a group build before, but I guess starting a post in the group build section sounds like a logical next step. I’ll post one when I get home tonight. I’ll drop a post into the helicopter section at the same time to see if any rotorheads are interested.

Anyone with experience in running a group build please feel free to pass along your experience / advice to me.

Any preference on the NACA vs IACO date? (March 3rd vs 5th), personally I’m leaning towards NACA myself as it was an early organization to forward aviation of all types.

I hate throw myself into another build but i can’t resist it. So I’m in with an Revell SST in Pan Am clipper colors.

Yep, it was me that had the previous Civil GB. It died a torturous death. I didn’t have that many sign up for it, and then I lost my internet, Ah well, these things happen.

Now, can I join this one?? Please?? I’ve got a minicraft Beech V33 Bonanza that is just screaming to be built.

A Bonanza definately qualifies, and that prior experience is why I thought I’d throw the net a little larger this time around, as I recall it started small and seemed to run into one problem after another, IIRC only 1 person actually finished (and it wasn’t me). I might even finish the Mooney I started for that one after my official entry is done. [:)]

I’ll be posting the official thread after dinner. [dinner]

Hi Kevin,

It died, but everyone sure was having a good time while it was going, wasn’t they? [:)] I went ahead and finished the one I was working on for the GB…

I too would like to be included in this one, if I may? I’ve just finished sanding the panel lines from a Heller Cap20L, and I would like to enter it please.

Take care,

Frank
