Earlier I mentioned my next build will be an old Tamiya Panzer IV Ausf H for Ostfront GB as soon as I am done with my Chaffee. Won a large stash via eBay and this kit came with it. Its time to place orders for aftermarket sets if necessary while the paint on Chaffee is drying.
I looked everywhere but it looks like there are not many aftermarket choices for the very old Tamiya kit Panzer IV. H #35054. But there were plenty for later release #35209. I managed to order aluminum barrel and Schurzen from Royal Model.
I am thinking about ordering this Cavalier Zimmerit set but it is for the latest Tamiya release so will it work with older set too? I understand that all Panzer IV Ausf H have zimmerit so I can not get away without one.
Looking good, now. I like that kit and I have a Neogard resin detail kit for a second effort with it. I’d go ahead a get the zemmerit set, couldn’t hurt.
Remember that the old Tamiya “H” kit was designed to be motorised and that they may have taken some liberties with certain dimensions in order to fit the standard gearbox/batteries in the hull.
Given the age and “quality” of the kit (though it is still nicely moulded) it may be a candidate for a DIY putty Zimmerit job.
I built the older H and the newer J and there is a world of difference in the hulls and detail. I’d be a little hesitant, but can’t imagine it being that far off. I used the Cavalier H zimmerit on my newer J and that was a perfect fit, but unsure of the older kit.
Thanks! Now I am having second thoughts about ordering this Cavalier set. I really appreciate your inputs. Applying putty zimmerit sounds like an adventure and I haven’t done it before. I will look into this option while I am open to other options. I remember somewhere 3M blue acrylic putty works best for zimmerit and it can be only brought at auto shops.
Yes, you are correct… it was designed to have a motor inside. There’s a big hole at the bottom that needs to be covered up. [:P]
Thank y’all for posting answers. For sure I am agreeing with you guys about doing putty zim since the old kit was only $7 so I have nothing to loose. If it goes wrong, I can always sand and try again…
I did some research here and understand that modelers like to use 3M BLUE Acrylic Glazing Putty because it doesn’t dry quickly and it comes in a huge tube lasting forever which is much cheaper than Milliput. After visiting couple of auto shops today, I finally found one but it wasn’t BLUE and it was WHITE. The guy told me its pretty similar and it doesn’t dry quickly like its sisters Green and Red. He allowed me to look at the computer monitor and it said white is a good substitute for blue… hope he is being honest.
