Carrier blast deflector dimensions?

I am trying to build a 1/72 catapult diorama. I have the F-14 and A-6 finished and ready, just looking for data to build the carrier deck.

Does anyone know what the dimensions are for the blast deflectors on Nimitz Class carriers? Or perhaps where I can get them?

This site has a huge amount of information about just about every ship in the US Navy. I took a quick glance and didn’t see info quite as specific as blast deflector size, but it may be there. What I did see is things like links to the home page for various Nimitz carriers like the USS Ronald Reagen. If the Navsource site doesn’t have the info, then you may be able to contact someone on one of the ships themselves. Good luck!

The JBD’s on each carrier are different. The Nimitz four JBD’s were all different sizes. If you are planning on using cats 1 & 2, the # 1 cat JBD is much taller than # 2.

I have this information I got when I built a CAT and JBD for the USS Ike. The measurements are approximate as I could not get the exact mesurement. It is pretty close give a few inches. These are from the time period of the early to mid 80’s

JBD # 1 is made up of six sections, each section being around twelve feet high, and five feet wide. That would make the # 1 JBD twelve by thirty feet, with all six raised.

JBD # 2 is made up of three sections, each section being around eight feet high and sixteen feet long. That would make the #2 JBD eight feet by forty eight feet.

JBD #3 is made up of six sections, with each section being around twelve feet high and four feet wide.

JBD #4 is made up of one section being around seven foot tall and twenty four feet long.

And as I said each carrier has different size JBD’s, so you would have to research the sizes on the carrier you are using.

Got you totally confused, now?

Verlinden used to make a resin deck with JBD. I believe it’s oop but you may find it on Ebay. Also the detail and scale ship series all have lots of JBD photos. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys. The carrier I am building the deck for is the USS Carl Vinson. Unfortuntely I need room for 2 aircraft on this diorama, so I don’t think Verlinden’s resin deck would be sufficient. I think I am going to build it from scratch. Thanks again!

I wanted to do this a while back (still do), but have been unable to come up with ANY kind of detailed, scale drawings or up close pictures. I even tried writing to Newport News Shipbuilding – the company that builds the carriers. If you come across any detailed info on these, let us know. Thanks.
