canadian & english armour

As i am working on my first project, and as look to the futur a bit, i would like to try to work on Canadian ww2 armour it could be fun . As i go thru the internet and finding interesting projects can i presume that british and canadian armour would be the same . I am starting to find the canadian markings for the tanks and find it more and more intersting, could be good . If so i could use british soldier to represent the canadian ??

Quite feasible as the same Batlledress uniform was used. I have an example of a 1941 Canadian made Battledress jacket marked with the Montreal maker’s name and a large “C” surrounding the traditional British broad arrow acceptance stamp.

Just like WWII Germany, Britain and it’s commonwealth changed the Battledress design slightly over time for economy reasons.

You might wish to check period photos of Canadian units first for insignia and jacket cut details. The Battledress changes are so subtle, however, that I really doubt they would be noticeable in 1/35th scale or smaller.

I think it’s about time to brew up a spot of tea and have a God Save the King group build. Lot’s of Commonwealth armor kits on the market now.

BTW…are you aware the Australians developed their own tank design?

WHAT - HO, Satch_ip !

Smashing Idea, wott? [:)]

This is an interesting coincidence. I recently started taking an interest in Commonwealth armor (mainly Aussie, but in general the entire commonwealth). Thanks to a fine Aussie member here (Boomerang) I am starting to develop a number of ideas for what really is an under represented niche. For the most part I can tell you that not everything in the British inventory got into the hands of its Colonial troops. The Canadians and Kiwi’s used Shermans, but the Aussies did not (they received 3 for testing but never accepted them). As far as I know the British were the only ones to use the Cromwell, not the Canadians, Ausies or New Zealanders. The Aussies made brilliant use of captured armor when possible. Canadians and New Zealanders (I am fairly sure) stayed primarily with Allied built armor. But thankfully it appears Canada is better represented in decal options than the ANZAC duo of Australia and New Zealand. Here is a link for Archer Fine Transfers that has a nice collection of decals for Canadian armor:

As for the group build idea. I got burnt out trying to participate in the previous two group builds I had joined, and as such I have not joined one since. But both were for aircraft, and frankly my biggst interests now revolve around armor. So I think I would actually enjoy this kind of group build. And what is more…I love tea. I shall enjoy a fine cuppa while modeling the King’s armored vehicles. [:D]

Denis… May I point you in the direction of some books on Canadian Armor in WW2.

The first is part 1 & 2 of Camouflage & Markings of Canadian Armored Vehicles in World War Two by Guthrie and Beldam.

The second is a series of books called The Weapons of War Series by Service Publications.

Both have lots of pictures and examples of equipment used.

Dennis:

A good color photo book on the British army uniforms for the European Theater of Operations is

The World War II Tommy ISBN 978-1-861269-14-0 (paperback) by the Crowood Press - Wiltshire GB.

shows examples of British uniforms from various services & periods of the war and includes photos of the armored corps coveralls.
