Hello all,I was just doing my first model(An AMT '69 Yenko Camaro )completely with brush painting Testors Gloss Enamel, and not-too long ago I found that you need claercoat for Enamels. So I looked,I heard that Testors Lacquer Flat clear spray was good, but they were unavailable and I kept looking around and I found 2 Gunze brand coats,1 was Mr.Super Clear, and 1 was Mr.Top Coat.Links below:
I spray clear enamel, acrylic, lacquer and acrylic lacquer over Testors enamels and other paints without any issues. You can always test on spare parts if unsure.
Pretty much any of the clear coats made for models will go well over any paint, as long as its coming from a rattle can or an airbrush. I have used a bunch of different kinds, but the Mr. Super Clear line works really well for rattle can clear coats. For airbrushing a clear coat, I’m using the clear coats from MRP paints. Just got a bottle of Alclad Flat Clear that I’ll be trying soon too. I used Testors Dull Cote and Gloss Cote for years, but the Dull Cote just isn’t flat enough for me anymore. So, as you can see, you have to experiment and find what works best for you. There aren’t really any compatibility issues you have to worry about, since atomized clear coats from a rattle can or airbrush generally don’t go on wet enough to start attacking the paint underneath them.
Some time ago I wanted to get a clear from Gunze sice I liked their “Mr Surfacer” spray so much. So I have bought “Super Clear” - since it’s so super, I thought - but on the can it says the stuff is so hot that it attacks decals and is also too hot to put on top of their “H” line of paints, only works with their “C” line of paints.
So I have bought their “Top Coat” and used it with decals and on various paints (can’t remember if I used it together with Testors).
As with a gloss clear coat you sometimes have to apply it pretty wet to get the gloss you want, I’d recommend the “Top Coat” line here, as it is the less aggressive one of the two.
Heh…I guess I should have read the warning label on the can. But, not having read it, I applied it over decals prior to a wash and had no issues with it attacking the decals or the paint.
