Can I use acrylic over a lacquer primer???

I primed my Tamiya Bradley IFV with Mr Surfacer 1500 black and want to paint it desert yellow with Tamiya acrylic. I know 1500 is a lacquer. . . .I get confused about what paint works with what. . . . Is this ok???

Not to shake the forum up but Mr Surfacer is actually acrylic in a lacquer-esque solvent. One big main ingredient of the solvent being acetone.

The solids are acrylic resin and aluminum powder. It does grip plastic very well.

Just sayin, as the coffee starts kicking in.

I know you already got your answer, but I wanted to add something.

I use Mr Surfacer primer on all my builds because I have not found any paint it will not work with. It is very versatile.

There are two exceptions to this…

  1. Enamels. I refuse to use enamels, so I don’t know if they will work over Mr Surfacer. They probably will, but I don’t know.

  2. There is a new automotive polyurethane paint I started using on some of my builds. It is so hot that no hobby grade prime will stand up to it. I have to use automotive grade primer.

But other than those two things, Mr Surfacer is my favorite primer. I use it in spray can form. It lays down smooth, and works with nearly any paint.

I posted this because I think a lot of people using Mr Surfacer may not have realized this is out there. Note that it says “Primer”.And read the smaller print in the post. Also if you compare products the ingredients are a bit different. I have both, I have the one I posted in the bottle that I thin maybe 30% with Mr Leveling thinner and it goes on very smooth. Then I have the regular surfacer in spray can which goes on smooth.

Now Chad brought up enamel. I’ve shot enamel, the Rustoleum 2X semigloss that actually comes out more gloss than semi. Anyway on Mr Surfacer it went on mostly well but I noticed some spots where it seemed almost as though it soaked into the Surfacer and left it flat and rougher than the rest of the spray job… By contrast, that has not happened over Stynylrez, which is a Primer/Sealer. Eventually I’ll try it of the Mr Primer Surfacer.

But seriously. Mr Surfacer is so good. I can’t imagine something better.
