This is a very weird photo of tiger 131 of bovington’s tank museum after capture and notice the driver’s hatch. Can somebody explain whats going on here?[;)]
The guys who restored the big tank suspect that there might have been some damage to the driver’s hatch, and that’s why it was put back on (backwards) before being shipped to the UK. Just a guess, but it’s as good as any.
Looks like the hatch should be rotated 90 degrees to the left.
Not to be a knit-picker Ryan, but the sig under the picture saying captured King Tiger… should say Tiger I, at least that’s what it looks like to me. [;)]
Here’s the answer according to Jentz…
‘The headlights were removed, the driver’s hatch was replaced by a radio operator’s hatch, and the shattered loader’s hatch was replaced after Fgst.Nr.250122 was captured by the British.’
I had a book from the library that covered that tank from before, during and after capture. I’ll try to find the title.
The above quote (and your pic as well) is from ‘Germany’s Tiger Tanks. D.W. to Tiger I’
Well, it was purposely installed that way by the smart driver so that he can see his way when it is the time to run away in reverse. He-he-he.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist it.
Oops, forgot that little part to update on the sig. Thanks!
You are faster than I am ausf [:D]
Its not fair to post a question like this so late, I am 7 hours ahead of you guys so I can not get to see this until early in the morning here [;)][:D]
The flip side is you get the early ones first or with a clearer head at least.
ausf and monrad; you guys having a contest or something??
I think the REAL reason the hatch is wrong is because the radioman did it so he could tell the driver where to go! lol
No its just for fun, thats all.
Its just that me and ausf have the same Tiger books.
check out

it has scads of pics on the tank including hatch explanation.
Thanks, it’s where I got the pic from, but thanks!-didn’t quite understand their explaination…
