bullet holes canopies

[:)] hi all has anybody got any good tips on how to create bullet holes in canopies any info on paints iwould like a bullet hole in my p51d to hide a very bad crack many thanks

Depending on how bad and long the crack is, you could try piercing the canopy with a hot pin, in a suitable scale and at a suitable point along the crack so it doesn’t look ‘planed’, and using the tip of your knife make some light scoring marks from the hole outwards, simulating fractures in the glass.

After your happy it looks like a bullet hole, take some white paint and very lightly, dry brush the inside of the hole where the glass would be fractured the most, this will give the impression of splintered glass.

Hope this helps a little

Use a small drill bit to make a hole, it need not go all the way through, just the illusion of doing it. Then using a sharp (No one ever tells you to use a dull one do they?) blade on the hobby knife make a spider web pattern around the “hole.” Cracks may be made at this time also.
Research as to the use of "bullet proof glass would be helpful, but bullet proof does not mean the bullets bounced off the glass as in an episode of the “A team”, and would still leave the glass webbed.

It may have happened, but I don’t remember ever seeing a photo of an actual round hole left be a hit on a canopy. The plexiglass tends to shatter in jagged, squared-off or pointy patterns. I’d look at a lot of battle damage photos of, say, B-17 noses (these care common photos) before committing to wrecking a canopy.

When I make holes, I vacuform the canopy first. It’s thinner and the hole looks more realistic. Vacuformed canopies can be “holed” with irregular shapes and you can take “chunks” out which looks like the damage seen in plexiglass in photo’s. I use a drill bit in a pin vice to make the holes, a hot pic “creaters” the hole. I’ve also dull coated the hole to simulate crazing.

I´m with dprevost, pin vice, dremel´s too hot. As for extent of damage what was he hit with? 7.62, 30mm, stray nebelwerfer?

are you nuts a nebelwerfer would blow half of the plane off.

A 300 mm would ensure that the cockpit no longer existed. Stray nebelwerfer would obliterate the entire plane I think…

nebelwerfer? screaming meemie?? either that pilot is a retard goin that low, or the nebelwerfer gunner is Annie Oakley… i once did a bullet hole in a plane canopy… i dabbed alittle (ALITTLE!!!) testors modeling glue…it looked pretty good…i dont suggest doing it…unless u want to go thru the trouble cleaning it…i was just lucky but if u feel that u can pull it off…(dont kill me) lol-DJ
