Built like a Sherman Tank!

Took these photos while we were up north in Michigan exploring and found this at a VFW hall. Perhaps another model in the future…

Small hatch M4A3… very nice!

No tank guy, but recognized it as an early M4 due to the vvss suspension. Never seen the applique armor on the turret before.

Always fun to see these in person. I was at the WWII museum in New Orleans a few months back and they’ve got one there. Heck…they’ve got a LOT of stuff there.

Thank you for sharing these photos. Haven’t seen a WWII tank at a VFW hall before.

This one looks to be a mish mash of parts. The hull is a small hatch direct vision slot type. Then it has the add on armor of the field depot applied kits over the ammo bins and the drive & assistant driver positions. The turret is a low bustle single hatch type, but the original split TC hatch has been replaced with the later single piece hatch with vision port cupola. It also has the up armor plate over the thinner area of the traversing motor as well as the later full width M34A1 gun mantlet.
A direct vision slot tank should not have had many of those features when it came off the production line and likely had them added later during overhauls/rebuilds.

Sorry to hear that the proving grounds are closed. In 1968 or 1969, I talked my parents into stopping for an afternoon, while we were traveling though there to my Uncle’s place.
