The thread on older kits reminded me of something. I have a 1:48 scale Viggen kit that’s about 20 years old and I plan to build. The thing is the plastic has yellowed a little ( nothing compared to a friend’s Tyderium shuttle, which was molded in light gray and now about the same color as Model Master’s FS Dark Tan ). What causes this and do I need to take any special precautions when I do get around to building it?
I couldn’t even find my way back to “normal” with the Hubble!
Hi Kugai, Seems maybe no one has a kit with this problem, sounds like a chemical ageing process so maybe good idea to look into it before taking it on – one old kit i have has a worp’d wing - its a XFrog Wellington moulded in USSR, the box was smaller than the sprues which caused the warp i think and i’ve not been able to cure this - stopping it being built - old kits = new problems it seems !
HI i dont know what causes the kits to yellow, i had this happen on an airfix phantom and it glued and painted ok, try painting a bit of sprue first just to make sure. I may be able to help with the frog wellington, if you hold the part under hot running water and gently bend it back to shape then put it straight into cold water until it has cooled right down it should stay straight. good luck and i hope this helps …Greg [8D]
