I’m looking at building jigs for modern and WWII aircraft in 1/72 and 1/48 scale. Anyone know if the LMG BB-01 would be a suitable size?
UMM-USA if you want a good plactic on, or Esty for a good Basswood one. Mine is from Esty and is suitable for 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32 scale. The model number you mentioned would work also.
What store did you get your jig from on Etsy? I’ve been looking for one of these. I have been looking at several. Haven’t pulled the trigger on getting one yet. I’m in that… Do I REALLY need it… stage…
Yes, the LMG-001 states it is * Suitable for 1/32-1/144 scales
Interesting. I bought my first item off of Etsy from LazyDog… I guess I haven’t been back to that shop in a while. LOL… Thanks.
I just received and built this yesterday. It will definitely work for aircraft from 72nd to 32nd scale, it’s highly adjustable. 144th might be awfully small, unless it’s a really big bird.
1:72 scale MS406:
I will say this, if you get the Ukrainian BB-01: be ready to spend an afternoon building it. The instructions are nearly useless and there’s some serious fitting and sanding involved.
Also, don’t build it with the base plate upside down, like I did, if you care about having the measurements visible. ![]()
All that said, the quality is high, and the laser cutting is very accurate. I am stoked to have a third hand to use on my upcoming 48th scale Hurricane.
Tell me about it. I bought their LMG WO-1212 and there are NO instructions. Just the one sheet showing the final product. I thought the QR code would send me to online instructions which would have been okay. But Noooo. It is a link to buy the product, which I already have. LOL…
I am one of the few people who doesn’t own or use a jig for aircraft in order to keep wings level, landing gear straight, etc.
I still use the old fashioned Mk.1 eyeball to look at things and hopefully make sure everything is correct. ![]()
I just like the idea of having something stable to act as a third or fourth hand.
Ahoy 68GT. To answer your question: Yes. The LMG BB-01 is plenty big for most 1/48 scale models and some of the bigger 1/72 scale airplanes. I have it and it is great to get your airplane lined up spot-on. I also have the LMG BB-45 which is smaller and the perfect size for most 1/72 scale airplanes and for 1/48 scale single engine fighters. I find it almost too big for an Me-109 sized 1/72 scale model. These jigs are Laser-cut kits, made from hard-as-nails plywood and will take an afternoon to build. You’ll need sandpaper and wood glue. My BB-01 went together with little fuss, the BB-45 was a nightmare with half-cut parts and lots of splinters. It wasn’t pretty and if I didn’t want it so badly I would have pitched it in the trash, but being a modeler and used to not-so-great kits, I stayed with it and now have a happy product. After a while, my BB-01 base warped like a banana. To fix it I soaked it in the sink and then clamped it to a flat surface for two days. After it dried, it was straight as an arrow. It takes some fiddling to get your model seated in place, but once it’s there you can get even the most out of line, obstinate model to straighten-up and fly right. I recommend them to anyone who is brave.
From reading the reviews on Amazon, it seems that the cut quality (depth) on these LMG kits is quite variable. I took a chance and got lucky – my sheets basically fell apart. I still had to do a lot of sanding to get the parts to fit right. I used CA glue vs. wood glue, just to avoid any waiting. But the parts all fit so tight I probably didn’t need either.
If warping is a concern – due to widely varying humidity in your work area – I’d recommend giving the big flat base sections a shot of clear poly (or similar – something that won’t react to your modeling solvents) to seal it. Just be mindful of the sliding parts getting too tight with the addition of a layer of poly.
Ah yes. I think a clear coat of poly would be helpful.
I think the variations might be because of where it’s made. Last I saw, LMG is based in the Ukraine while there is a ton shipping from China on Amazon. Says counterfeit and quality control issues to me.
