Build Log: USS EDSON - Atlantis Models' Reissue of the USS FORREST SHERMAN

I mentioned the below pictured model a few months back in my introduction post. Here I wanted to provide a few pictures depicting the build from start to finish. For brevity I’ll simply state this was my first model build after a 40+ year break from the hobby. This build is from an Atlantis Models kit which is a reissue of the Revell Kit first introduced in the mid-1950s. The model - a fitting restart - is in the markings of the USS Edson (DD 946) which was named after my Grandfather. It was built essentially out of the box, and as such reflects more the lead ship in the class - the USS Forrest Sherman launched in 1955 - than the Edson which was lauched some three years after. The last picture in the series is of the hull for interation number 2 which I intend to detail more closely to the USS Edson as launched. All for now.

Impressive scratch modeling using the basic hull! What material have you used for the deck and superstructure? I have seen a similar scratch build of the USS Edson done by Phil Toy (http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/users/Phil-Toy/user-index.html). I hope to get to the point where I have the time and skill to do a similar build; my iteration number 2 will focus on the USS Edson during her early years with an attempt to add PE rails and ladders and scratch build torpedo tubes and some other details. Have you posted a build log of your effort?

Another nicely done model with modified details using the same basic kit - in this instance the USS John Paul Jones (DD 932): Forrest Sherman Class USS John Paul Jones DD932 from the 1/319 Revell kit

Ahoy MarGen3. I salute you for your impressive USS Edson DD 946 and I also salute with profound humility, your grandfather, Major General Merritt A. Edson Sr. (Anyone who hasn’t heard of “Edson’s Ridge” on Guadalcanal should take some time and read about it).

i used 1mm(.040") sheet styrene plastic for the decks & superstructures. no build logs as all model building are on pause while i cleanup well over 140 Booklet of General Plans of US navy ships saved on my computer. currently working on the Haven class hospital tho those plans are missing pages.

Strongeagle, I truly appreciate your comments. In 2017 I was invited to attend the 75th anniversary observance of the Battle for Guadalcanal, specifically the Battle for Edson’s Ridge - a humbling life experience I will always treasure. It was during that visit the Government of the Solomon Islands dedicated Edson’s Ridge as a National Park. Some photos from that trip follow. Semper Fidelis

The last is one of my favorites and one of the best photos of the USS Edson in her original configuration. She was later refit to include the addition of a two level structure mid-ships housing a ULQ6 ECM antenna array, the removal of her two 40mm guns, and the enclosing of her bridge. A brief history of the ship can be found on Wikipedia at:
