I need a bit of advice please guys. About a year ago I bought a 1/24 Monogram kit of the 35b and have been collecting references ever since to detail it. I did this model in the seventies, straight from the box, and had it displayed on top of the TV on a mirror for ages. Even ‘box stock’ it looks good.
This time all the chrome parts will be stripped and replaced with the correct alloy and steel colours, side lacing replaced with wire, and brakes and engine wiring detailed. So far, so good, but I want the paintwork to reflect the age of the car - in that I don’t want it to look like something from a Pebble Beach Concours. How do I get a dull but correct satin look to the paintwork.? The obvious solution would be to rub down the gloss coat or apply a satin over the top, but does anyone have any better ideas please?

Hey crasher, you could try some ‘satin’ paint. ive seen it at wal-mart, it might work well since you dont want a miles deep look on it. good luck.
You can achieve the effect that you are looking for by doing the following:
After painting the body with the correct color and the decals
have been applied, if any, overspray with clear flat. When the
clear flat has dried completely, burnish it with a piece of old
tee-shirt or flannel. You can achieve everything from a soft
glow to an almost glossy finish. Just like many of the Bugs
that I’ve seen at various vintage races. Don’t forget to lighten
the color slightly to simulate time and sun bleaching. [;)]
As an aside, I built this same kit way back in the 1960’s. Since I didn’t own an airbrush at the time and couldn’t find the correct color in a spray can, I just oversprayed the bare plastic with clear gloss. Although the color is a little dark, it still looks pretty good today. [:)]

Thanks guys - you’re lucky to still have the model Pete - mine went along time ago about two house moves ago. Seem to remember making that one on the coffee table in front of the TV! Times change eh??
