Is there alot of violence at Ohio State? I just don’t see why a police department would need so much power. Other then that the MRAP is a awesome piece of armor.

BTW, this post wasn’t about the reasoning behind the Campus popo getting an MRAP, it was posted as an option to the same old, humdrum tan/sand paint job on military vehicles.

Some conspiracy theorists are touting the idea the the US military is bring back MRAPs from overseas and getting them ready for US roads, all as part of the big takeover. Or is that the United Nations’ invasion plot? Dunno. They all run together…

A few years ago, there were not enough MRAPs… now they are giving them (as long as the recipient pays transportation) to PD’s. Whatever happened to putting stuff in reserve/mothballs until needed again? definitely overkill for a campus PD. I dont care how much the drunken students riot or for what excuse. Worst case, Ohio still does have a National Guard right? As to the intent of the original post, it would be a most interesting in various law enforcement guises.
stik: the DoD has gone through boat loads of scenarios about the logistics of the expensive equipment that was shipped to the middle east in support of Afghanistan and Iraq operations. The pgm mgt people have wrung out every feasible scenario. If some can be brought back and taken off the books (in order for us not to maintain them in overseas depots), then it doesn’t surprise me. Bases and posts in Saudi and Kuwait are fine – but you can’t devote every acre to lots and warehouses of 1000s of mothballed AFVs.
I bet the vehicles could be stored here stateside somewhere in an existing base. Ft Hood, Ft Bliss, Ft Irwin, etc. It just appears a bit shortsighted to be dumping off comparatively new purchase vehicles already. Heck, I have been on a few Guard bases (Camp Roberts CA, Camp Williams UT) where they could easily build a basic vehicle storage facility, or use a pre existing one without impacting the training areas.
We are actually only getting rid of a small amount of them. The fact is we have way too many.
“According to a G-8 spokesman, approximately 60% of the 21,000 MRAPs currently held by the Army will be placed in storage or prepositioned stocks, 30% will remain in use with active units and 10% will be employed in home-based troop training. Additionally, a small number (roughly 300-400) will continue to be loaned to allies in the region and still others (an undetermined number) will be scrapped.”
Places to store them isn’t the issue. It’s the cost associated with transporting them to the destination and maintaining the inventory once it is in place. Even vehicles I owned that were rarely moved for maintenance training purposes took an enormous amount of manpower to maintain so they don’t deteriorate as they sit idle.
At least it didn’t go to Kent state
Just think of all the war machines, aerial and ground force, that we littered the world oceans post-WWII so they wouldn’t have to be transported back to the USofA. At least these aren’t being left on the sea floor to rust…[whstl]

I hear ya guys… believe me, I am the last one to question stuff like this… but… 113s are a dime a dozen nowadays., if some PD needs an armored vehicle… WWII dumping of new build stuff… Lord that was a crying shame… literally… It just chaps my hide under current circumstances to see such a new vehcile going to such an end… The Sheriffs Department that I work for now recieved 4 SH-3 Sea Kings under similar circumstances in the 90s. Let’s just say that they are no longer flying today due to circumstances. I know that short term fiscal restraints are the name of the game here…

How many different MRAP variants and kits in 1/35 are out there? I am not up to speed on these things at all…
Stik: Panda & Kinetics both released the M-ATV last year - it’s the same variant and each has their own problems. Riich announced Dec 2011 that they were releasing the MaxxPro MRAP…just not when. In Feb 2013, Kinetic announced they’d be releasing a MaxxPro after the IDF M109 and the RG-31.
Heck, I waited 7 years for Trumpeter to finally release the American LaFrance Eagle pumper…I’ll wait for the MaxxPro.
