I had very little time this week but it turned out very productive because I suppose I had a game plan laid out instead of going down to the shop and looking at the parts trying to figure out how to make them do what I want.
And dangit all, I forgot to take a picture of the new slip stream generator, it’s mounted and ready to go. Much more streamlined than the one pictured above.
Not sure what you call this, I used the term tillers. the top one is linked to the rudder and the bottom one is connected to the tail wheel so when you turn the rudder the tail wheel turns. The springs are to absorb any shocks. the tillers are just scrap PE folded and sanded. I think they are a might wide but I think it’s close. the springs are just .015 solder wrapped around some music wire and attached with CA. there is a lot of detail missing from this but I think it works well for the effect.
I haven’t updated in a while, I haven’t done much to warrant an update. Guess summertime chores have taken priorities more than modeling. I need to adjust that thinking (especially now I have gotten caught up on those chores)
Here’s the elusive Slip Stream Generator mounted with a piece of PE strip acting as a mounting bracket. I could not find a picture of the real thing mounted in place so I exercised the creative license again. I’m going to run a wire up the strut to represent, well the wire…
Here’s the cut I had to make to get the wings back in place. I think it was about 1mm wide when I got the wings back in place with the struts in place and aligned.
Filled in with some scrap stock then a coat of Mr.Surfacer. It’s smoothed out well and should be gone when I get some paint on it.
Got the Bazookas constructed, there was no instructions on how to do it, only how to mount on the struts.
Things should get back on track now. getting the bazookas in place and wired up shouldn’t take long and then it’s paint and decal time.
OK Obviously we have a problem. The ones on the Lefthand side look like crap. As I was working with them the little itty bitty plastic U bolts just started disintegrating. That’s when I reached for the .015 solder and drilled a hole on the mounting plank. So when I moved on to the other side I went ahead and used the solder instead of the plastic parts.
SO in typical Moon Puppy fashion of two steps forward, one step back, I will rework the ugly Bazookas.
The other point of contention I have here is the forward sites on the weapons. I thought about removing them completely but one of the few pictures I have of the original aircraft you can clearly see the forward sites are left in place.
Thanks Daywalker for sticking with me on this, guess I’m taking to long to keep folks interested.
To replace one missing sight on the Bazookas I went back to the halftrack and yanked one of the buckles off a strap I used on some of the stowage, I can replace it with a smaller buckle.
Got base coats on. And just as predicted that kewl looking faded effect that was going on was wiped out when clear coat was applied.
What I’ve done here is applied a dot filter on the top of the wing. Once I got the colors blended I put a couple of dots of white and blended again trying to get that faded look again down in the valleys between the ribs…Well, did it work?
Ailerons positioned correctly, I hope. Looks good to me. Notice the control lines hooking up to the ailerons. that’s the no-see-em fishing line.
I took it outside to get some outside shots in sunlight. to my eye it looks a little inconsistent. May have to touch it up a little. I have not sealed the oils so I can wipe it all down and try again if y’all think it needs it.
Talk to me!
Oh yeah, here’s a overall with Bazookas in place and the prop sitting there. Didn’t that Champs Decal Solution work great on Rosie’s decal?
I have the stripes masked on the midsection of the fuselage because the decal Bronco had was just too large to work with. It had both side insignia AND the stripes as one decal. Guess I could have cut it up some but still, I think I would have worked more on that decal than masking and painting.
Stupid question, pigments go on top of a flat coat or gloss?
Outline mask in place, I took thinner and removed the stripes that were painted earlier so there would be no raised outlines. Using enamels here because that’s the only dark blue I can find. It will be the last time I tell ya that!
I had taken a shot with the stripe and star mask in place before I squerted the blue but none turned out well enough to post.
Next step, blue and let it dry. Can’t wait to try one with the red outline /sarcasm
Sloppy, workable.
Sloppy as well be not as bad.
Hey I’ll keep them. I bet using acrylics and doing it well planned out will yield much better results.
Sorry I missed the last couple of updates! As for the invasion stripes, I have seen photos of those being field applied with a broom so neat and straight is probably not accurate! They look good to me. Not sure about your blue and white question, though. Perhaps someone else can help?
I agree about the strips, there’s a picture out there somewhere of a C47 having it’s stripes applied with mops. No masking. But until you and I can convince the rest of the modeling world that handpainting invasion stripes is more accurate I think we’re going to have to mask them to get approval from our peers.
Lots of pictures tonight. Not finished yet but close.
Things I know but I have to remember when working this close to DONE. NEVER confuse the Lacquer Thinner for Turpenoid!!!I’m sitting there working with working a oil wash and wondering why the oils are not thinning but acting up looking like powder. Stupid ME I went ahead and started using it…I"m not going to say where, I think I got it covered but damage was on the way.
Other thing to remember, put all the decals on before starting the filters and dirtying up the build…I forgot to put the unit and aircraft codes on the side, thats why they are so white compared to the stripes. I’ll fix that soon enough.
Well here’s where we are tonight.
I did a little white-oil wash trying to get that kewl looking fade job I had when I first started painting. White may not be the right color to attempt this, thoughts?
Under the wing is a bit more dirty than I intended at this point. I plan on getting some mud up on the underside, being thrown up by the main gears. No mud flaps on this thing!
The inspection panels under the wings were wrong. I filled in the half moon sunken panels with putty and replaced them with 3mm disk I cut out with a leather punch. They may be over stated some but it was addressed. Whadda think? :face:
I used dry grimy black pigments on the leading edge of the wing and with a Q-Tip moistened with lacquer thinner I forced the colors out of the valley between the ribs and along the leading edge.
If you look really really close you can see the radio I fussed over so much.
Thank you sir. I like the way it turned out also. Still got some work to do on it but waiting to play with some pigments before I apply them to this. it’s going to have to be tastefully mudded up, just a bit.
Don’t let it sit in the stash though, it’s too nice not to build. I mean, 6 Bazookas…[8-|]
