I started this kit about a year ago as a “quick build”[blkeye] And while this kit is a simple quick build, it sort of got sidelined during the painting process. It was also a good learning experience in building 1/350 subs in not adding all the little parts before painting (live and learn)
anyways here is the final boat, I hope you like.
Comments and critiques welcome… I really need advice in improving my ship builds.
I like the weathering, it’s “enough” without being “too much.”
Wish there was a way to “dial down” markings on subs, though. They are of little import to the submariners, and really probably only go on “fresh” by the delivering yard.
“Lower hull” painting is probably similar, too–something that only occurs on delivery. But, it makes for a better model to my eye (and, likely, yours). I want to pile kudos on for weathering “all around” as that is a seldom-done item.
Thank you Capn. I honestly had no idea how to approach weathering this thing. Most photos show subs either prisitne or extremely weathered. Seeing as this is my first “grown up” completed build of a sub this is very much a learning experiment here. As will be the next several subs I have going right now.[whstl]
You know I have been following you and I was wondering where the completed kits have submerged too… I know that was corny. Well just to let you know my stock pile is growing everyday. I went from just Russian cold war subs to Us cold war subs and now looks like I am adding Slava class and Ticonderoga class ships to the mix. I guess this is where i start getting lost and buy random models. Such as the new M114 “Ha” waiting on that one.
Question what are you using for an airbrush set up. I really dont have much money. Just got married on the 11 so funds are low. They should increase though. Go thing is there is no more buying for the wedding. Whats an effective airbrush kit? do i need to airbrush. Hope all is well.
Still waiting to see the Akula and the Alpha. Oh found the Alpha too. Orange box special with the Uss Yorktown. 25.00 cant go wrong. Also Orange box USS Maryland and USS Chicago. You might like them. Fantastic job on the weathering and I will leave the tiny parts off my fleet till they are completed.

I am still building at my glacial pace, although the Alpha is real close to completion. Just having some issues with decals not conforming properly. I have a good cold war surface navy in my stash that I will start tackling later this year or early next year. All those subs and the Graf Spee need to be completed first.[prte]
Those Orange Box Specials are pretty good. I do hope they do one with the Typhoon class (and maybe the Kidd!!!) since they do seem to be going thru the sea power line up in those. I did pick up the Maryland/Chicago set. No matter how long you have been married, you gotta make those dollars count! Kids get expensive![:O]
On those kits I used an old Badger 350. You can find those starting for around $35 or so. And they will last! A great airbrush to grow up with! Do you need an airbrush? well only you can decide that answer, but you will really enjoy it once you start learning and seeing what you can do with one. But if you do get one, get a compressor or other air source rather than those propellant cans…those are expensive and not very effective. If there is a Harbor Freight by where you live, check them out, they have a good started airbrush/compressor setup for cheap I am told.

Thanks for the wishes. I think it is funny. I sit at home at night idle. Reading my FS mag as the wife looks at me wondering when I am going to start these projects. She quietly waits in anticipation whether thats good or bad. She knows she will not see me much when I start.
I actually do have a harbor freight in town here and I will have to go check it out. I saw this one on there site. 1/5hp and a 58 psi take a look at it. I would buy a new airbrush. I am looking at a double action Paasche at the moment. I just want to make sure if I am spending 90 its going to be good or I will spend the 150 on a compressor if it lasts. I am one of those guys. I bought the snowblower that will last 25 years and paid 400 more for than the one that might make it 15.
Its nice to hear about your orange box comments. I might have to pick those up soon. The good thing is we have a house and all of those goodies. She has an 11 year old so the only thing we spend on is the bills and fixerupper stuf around the house. But the model cave is looking good. I would say 50% complete till I can start pumping the models out.
Lastly… If your serious about getting your hands on an Alanger Typhoon or Delta IV go on ebay. I know its bad. I spent 60 + 20 = 80 for the ty to be shipped to my door. But it is impressive. You will have to scribe in panel lines mmmuuuuuuaaaaaaahhhhhh

That Harbor Freight set up looks like a real deal. The compressor alone is worth that price. I payed more 22 years ago for a simpler one that still works.
Well I think you might have just sold me on it. So how do you regulate the pressure from 5 psi to 30? this is a 58 psi model. Do you control the psi on the compressor or on the AB?
That appears to be a pressure regulator next to the moisture trap at the outlet coupling. PSI is controlled there. My old compressor does not have that… Tax returns are soon… it maybe time to move up in the world… it is the second decade of the 21st Century now…[^o)]
Now I received the new issue yesterday. The article on Airbrushing is saving me big time. I have no idea what I am going but its telling me things I should look into. Such as I am thinking a gravity AB possible in the future? But I am going to get this. 90 dollars cant complain. Plus I just saw a guy using it on youtube and it is impressive.

Well I am starting to build up the USN Subs. I have the Seawolf by Bronco. Newer!!! But now going to get the Orange box kit. Do you have any photos on those? Secondly there is another Orange box kit thats calling me. Ticonderoga Class with an Alfa for 25 dollars. yep I am pumped.
