British 17 pdr. ?

Hello all,
Was just wondering. What caliber was the British 17 pdr. gun?
For those of you who are technically inclined, how did it compare with some of the German 75’s? Accuracy? Range? Muzzle velocity? Penetrating ability?
Thanks to any and all who may take time to help stamp out ignorance as we know it [D)].

This is some of the tech data from an old WW2Fact File publication.

ukgeoff,
Thanks for the information. Sounds like they were pretty comparable.

In a comparison between the 17 pounder and the Russian 85 mm on the T 34 85, the 17 pounder was better. The compairison was on penatrating a panther.

------------------------- 17 pounder ___ 85 mm
Front Turret ______ 1600 yds ___ 500 m
------- Mantlet _____ 2500+ yds ____ 0 m
------- Glacis __________ 0 yds ____ 0 m
------- Nose(Hull)_____ 400 yds ____ 0 m

The 17 pounder and the Pak 40 were not compairable. The 17 pounder shell was twice the weight of the Pak 40 and the penetration range was twice that of the PaK 40. The muzzle velocity was simular. I don’t know the calaber of the 17 pounder but I think it was more than the Pak 40 due to the long gun tube of the 17 pounder. Greg.
