Boss 302 Pics

Anyone know where I could get pics of a Boss 302 on the net? Original Ford paint job. Not something that has been repainted.

I did the Google search. Grabber yellow would be good but not necessary. I mainly want to see the back end as it came from the factory. The rear window and trunk lid in particular.

HUH??? Did someone say “Boss 302??”

Here’s a picture of my personal car…

The only difference is that I painted the hood flat black, probably back in ’ 73 or ’ 74 and I installed hood pins. Other than that, this is a “correct” color scheme. Granted, it does need restoration, but it IS the REAL DEAL, matching VINs and all.

BE ADVISED: all the Boss 302 articles you have seen are WRONG; the Monogram kit is based on the Boss 429 kit, which correctly represents the front shock towers peculiar to this version. Any model of a Boss 302 with the 429 towers is WAY WRONG! If you graft the towers from a ’ 66 GT-350 into the ’ 70 kit, you’ll be closer to being correct, but you’ll still need the doublers at the lower part of the towers to be spot-on.

And I can provide pictures of the CORRECT underside paint/primer setup unlike FITTERS car…of course I never did finish my car. What are the odds, FITTER and I know each other for almost 40 years and we both end up with Grabber Blue Boss 302s!

Also there are differences in the rear lower quarter panel stripe application and decklid stripe application depending on if the car was built at Dearborn assembly or at Metuchen! And the horn mountings differ also…Also Dearborn mounted the body assembly tag on the core support while Metuchen (my car) had it on the inner fender. All of 2"X3" so very visible in 1/24 scale!

Jim, dig out the Boss block you built and post a picture…very detailed, freeze plugs and all!

What I was wondering about was the painting of the area below the rear window and the trunk lid. The Monogram kit says to paint these areas black. I heard that the painting of these areas may depend on whether the louvers were installed. I heard the louvers weren’t installed on all cars, because they are illegal in some states.

The Monogram shock towers will cause the front end to sit lower?

The area behind the rear glass is flat black, right up to the top edge of the spoiler, and so is the rear window trim. The inset area in the back is also flat black including the tail light bezel rims, but the inset portions of the bezels are Argent (silver). It’s hard to see in my crummy photo, but there is also a single pinstripe around the recessed area, which is part of the stripe kit.
An interesting side note is the fact that the stripes were made from Skotchbrite adhesive film which acted as a huge reflector at night when hit with a headlight beam. Quite a good idea way back then… too bad it never really caught on.
Another point regarding the stripes: The large center stripe on the hood was painted on, while the smaller hood stripes were a part of the stripe kit.

Rick… I’d have to do some serious digging to find that engine. I looked for some of my old car models the other day and I couldn’t find all of them.

Fitter, that is awesome…and I am very jealous of you[:D]! I have owned a 65, 66, 67 coupe, a 69 Mach 1, a 79 Indy Pace Car Replica, and an 82 coupe. My old coupes all had the in-line six in them, oldest two with 3-spds. Mach had a worn out 302 in it, the 351 had been blown. 79 had the 302 4-sp, body was ragged out. The 302 was transplanted into the 82 and I sold it to a friend who drag raced it all of the time. I now drive an 87 Wrangler…it’s not fast, but it is fun.

FITTER, .et me see if I understand. Flat black from the rear window to the front edge of the spoiler. Does this mean that the area under the spoiler and back to the edge of the trunk lid is body color?

When I said “spoiler,” I meant the integral deck-lid spoiler, and not the optional wing. The black paint goes to the high point of that rear deck before it breaks over the back. If I get a chance I’ll go out to the garage and take a fresh pic.

The Boss '9 type shock towers do not make the car sit lower. the difference is that they are cut down and somewhat more outboard than the Boss 302/standard Mustang units to make room for the “Blue Crescent” Boss 429 engine. Understand FITTER is somewhat anal retentive about the details…put a piece of coal up his butt and get a diamond back[:D]

BTW, Fred Cady does the decal sheet with the correct black stripes and other detail decals but sadly they are not reflective like the real thing[;)]

I have a couple of the old Jeff Hitchen die cast “shaker” hood scoops that were made to allow conversion of the Boss 429 kit into the Boss 302 back in the early 80’s when Monogram released it.

There are some other issues with the body shapes but not much you can do about them. One big improvement is to remove the cast in “B” pillar from the kit body. This is actually a narrow piece of stainless trim that is attached to the pivoting quarter window and not nearly as thick or wide as the kit replicates. Best modeled with piece of thin plastruct and some foil…

Build a Boss and post the pictures here! And remember what Parnelli Jones, the revered Boss Trans-Am racer said…“if you’re still in control, you’re not going fast enough!” worn by legions of Boss faithful on T-Shirts!

I’ll let Rick tell about it; for now, compare this shock tower to your kit tower (the Monogram Boss 302 and their Shelby Mustang are both based on the earlier Boss 429 kit, as is the Revell 1:25 scale '69 Mach One)

Fred’s catalog doesn’t list any decals for the 1970 Boss 302. Were they different than the Monogram decals?
