Does anyone know anything about kits produced by KMC? I understand a Boeing 727 was produced by them about 5 years ago would id love to find, but it seems to be a mystery as to what happened to it. Can anyone help with info on KMC, why this kit is no longer being produced and where I might find one?
KMC shut down business a little while back. I understand that they are a) completely gone b) shut down but still in business c) just doing conversion sets d) just doing decals under another name. I wanted one of the 727s badly but didn’t have a chance to get one. I have seen one that was built up and while it did indeed look like a 727, there was something a little off with it, like the contours may have been off or possibly the dimensions were a little off. She made a beautiful bird though done up as an American Airlines bird. I agree that the only place you’ll find one will be e-bay. But use caution when doing so as this was an all resin kit and there may be some warpage if it was in storage awhile.
KMC released the 727 shortly before they went out of business. I saw one kit in the box & it was pretty rough. It was an all resin kit & the sample I saw was warped in the box, with a lot of breakage of many of the detail parts. The packaging was horrible, providing little protection for the many fragile pieces. I believe at least one of the original KMC owners is still in business under the name “Black Box”.
I also saw one in the box and it was rough. Never did see one built up. It would take quite a bit of work to get a decent model out of those parts. IMHO. But the only game out there for a 1/72 727!
I have 7 of them of my own. I have one that the fuselage has been put together and joined with the wings. The kits are not resin, but a hard plastic and are nice fitting airplanes. They have some rough areas, but they are nothing worse than a minicraft kit.
The remaining 6 are still sitting in the boxes, wrapped in plastic. The one I am putting together now (when I have time) is going in old Alegheney colors. I have also blown up decals at kinkos so I can make United, AA retro, Delta , USAir and Hughes. I also have Branniff.
Being stuck in the dark ages, I do not have a digital camera but I will take pics of the one airplane along with the remaining if you would like.
Will I sell them? You can email me at RDWarfel@aol.com and try to convince me, but as of now most likely not. If you can give me a good lead on other large scale airliners, then I might be willing to give 1-2 of them up. I would really like some 1/72 737’s or MD-80’s. If I do decide to sell them, I will not rake you for cash. This is a hobby and fun…you should not be charged triple the original cost, like the bone heads who are trying to get me to pay $180 for Cubs Spring Training tickets in Vegas. Thats another story!
Other large scale kits I still have are Doyusha’s 1/100 767’s, DC-10’s, DC-9’s and an old 747 kit made by some company I cannot think of the company right now. It’s in old UAL colors. Let me see if Doyusha is going to be making anymore anytime soon, or you can check for yourself. They are usually dirt cheap. I bought my 767’s for $40 each.
