Patrick, the wheels are a bit of both speculation and photos.
From the research pics I have, none of which show Yellow 14 btw, it shows 109E’s with metal rims, and painted rims from the era.
Given it was the BoB and the sortie turn around time was back to back, there is a good chance that Axis a/c were flying with all sorts of bits painted and in n/m.
Painted looks better IMHO but it would be nice to have an accurate representation.
Unfortunately evidence is not always avaiable and I’m no rivet counter in any case.
I’ve found a simpler solution to the ‘mottle’ problem. Stencil Decor “Spouncer”! Six cellulose sponges (1/4 dia) on wooden dowels. Gives the same effect and are ‘cheap at Michael’s’, especially with 40% coupon.[2c]
