Bf-109 Question

I just pulled an old 1/48 Bf-109E off the stack-o-stuff and I noticed something I never saw before.

The cowling MG’s are not lined up evenly as I had always supposed. That is to say the barrel of the left MG seems to be several inches longer than the right.

Theh instruction shee tconfirms that this is not a snafu, but I am wondering what is the purpose? Soemthing to do with gunflash? Something else?

Photos of later 109’s dont seem to show this feature, but to be honest I have not found too many good shots.

Ideas?

Most likely due to the ammunition feed shutes needing to be staggered.

Yup yardbird is correct. Take a look at the guns on a P-47 and many other aircraft in wings or cowlings

The Ki-61 Tony has the same arrangement

Hmmmmm

Interesting.
