This is going to sound really bad, but I have never built a 109 in any scale in my life. I’m doing a project on them for school, so whatever information I can get would be great. I need some stuff on the airframe; test results, G-limits, in general a pilot’s overview of the plane. I’m building a model to go with it. I like 1/32nd scale for WW2 fighters, and I would like it to be a model of any variant from E-‘’’ onward. Any ideas/info?
I’ll defer the specs to the experts, as they have much more info than I.
As far as a 1/32 kit, For the Emil you currently have the Hasegawa offering. It’s an older mold, with raised panel lines. Dragon earlier this year showed test shots of a new molding for an “E”, though I don’t know when it will be released. Hasegawa also has a number of 1/32 Gustavs and Karls, including the G-4, G-6, G-10, G-12, and K-4. HTH! [tup]
WHAT! with a name like red bar 13 you never built a 109[:)]. Just joking with you. I agree with frank anything hasegawa. They curently have in 1/32 scale a retooled G-6 with harmanns marking, A K-4 with hartmann marking and a G-10 night fighter. There G-14 is still around as well, again with hartmanns marking. The G-4 is getting hard to find. Hasegawa still hasn’t poped out and F type [:(!][V] in 1/32 scale.
In 1/48 scale just about anything you want can be found right now.
the 109 went though alot of changes and the performance also went up then down and back up again. So when you find out what variant you are going to do let me know and I can give any info you require. I’m going as assume you’ll need this info in english. If I remember correctly you are minor, so this is not for a college paper or anything. I’ve already been used as a source in two people Bibliography’s this year[:D].
Tamiya and Hasegawa both make 1/48 Emils. Tamiya makes an E-3 and an E-4/7 Trop. Hasegawa makes an E-3, E-4, and an E “Hahn?”. I don’t know of any 1/32 Emils. I have the Hasegawa 1/32 K-4 and it is awesome. The G-14, G-6, and G-10 are still available as well and easy to find.
1/48 has pretty much any 109 ever made. The Gustav is the most numerous. You can find F-2, F-4, G-2, G-6, G-10, G-14, and K-4s with little problems. Also, don’t forget about the T and H variants. You can find some 1/48 Ts that are reasonable and get conversions to convert a Freidrich to an H though they are kind of pricey. Then their are the W and Z variants, but finding a model of them is very hard.
For just a little overview of the 109, read this. It is pretty informative:
I agree that Tamiya and Hasegawa are better kits but for a project you might want to save some coin and go with Hobbycraft. They have respectable Me-109’s in all the major variants of the 109 that all build into respectable kits in 1/48/scale.
Here is the collection I built a couple of years ago.
And here is a decent set of references that I used to do the builds.
Thanks for the help, guys. Phoenix, in the Corsair vs. Luftwaffe thread, didn’t you have a set of RLM documents or something on the 109k-4’s preformance? Those would be excellent sources if you have them!
Ok red, I Don’t know what type of project your doing but heres the info you wanted. Pilot thoughts on the 109. I gave you one postive and one very negative. This just go to show not every pilot liked the 109. Pilots like erich hartmann (ace of aces) loved the 109 and would fly nothing else. Others found It hard to fly and difficult to handle at high speeds. But keep in mind these are people’s opinion’s. Also schroder hated messerschmitt and was buddies with tank and focke wulf. But I think this will serve to give a good honest view on this aircraft. The 109 had it’s share of problems and Schroder complains about all of them[;)].
Next I provided you with 2 charts from messerschmitt Ag. One is a speed performance chart the other is a climb rate chart. You really don’t need to read german to figure these out. They were from testing of the K-4 in november of 1944. They are part of document #5026/ 27 11/12/1944 from messerschmitt AG to the RLM. Some of the performance info I listed comes from this document the rest is from US testing post war. (incase you need to list your sources).
Finally I provided you with a 2 view line drawing. I think I covered everthing you asked for. I have no idea if you use all this info but it sure will look impressive if nothing else. If you have questions let me know. That’s alot of info to take in.
