Hey Armor Brethren, I’m petting out a feeler for a captured armor GB. This would represent tanks, support vehicles and such that were captured, repainted or reconfigured, and marked by the opposite side. An example would be a Soviet T-34 captured and pressed into service by the Germans. Any country and any vehicle from WW II could be represented. I’m not sure if this had been attempted or done in the past. At this point it is just a feeler and I think maybe a fall or winter start for this year. Sooner or later? Just post what your feeling would be towards this idea.
Rob, Yep, any country in any combination. For instance a captured Sherman in German hands and a Captured King Tiger in US hands with US markings. And so on. I’ll figure out the particulars as a date is decided. Maybe a late summer start or later. As I did some research I was surprised at the amount of captured vehicles that were in-turn pressed into service. I found a picture of a Jeep that was used by Germany and much more. I could be an educational build. The biggest requirement would be to have fun and enjoy the posts. Hopefully we can get alot of builders if the time is right. That is why I want to keep the start date loose for now.
I’ve got abot another 4-6 weeks left to work on my current wip Tiger I before it’s finished. Please bear in mind that I can only model at weekends due to work commitments which is why I am saying 4-6 weeks).
I’ve just added to my stash Dragons Soviet SU-85M Tank Hunter. It looks like a great build with loads of cammo/marking options.
With this timescale in mind I’ll be starting this build during Marh or April. If you decide to get going with a GB sooner than planned then I’d definately be in. Even if you have to make a start date later in the year I still may build this 85M as a Beutepanzer anyway!
One of the marking options just happens to be a captured SU-85M with Balkenkreuz. The only change to the paint job is small patches of Dunky added to to the Green surface coat.
I won’t make any promises, as the last year has very effectively sabotaged all of my modelling progress in one way or another… but I have three of such builds in progress, and those three will undoubtedly be the next on my agenda. Are softskin vehicles included as well?
Nice, now we are five or six participants - that’s a group, isn’t it? [;)]
Thought I would recommend this site containing a lot of pics on Beutepanzers for some inspiration.
I’ve been thinking about what I will build, but the problem is that I’ve almost exhausted my best ideas. I think I’ll go with a Matilda Mk II or III, either captured by the Germans on the Eastern front or in North Africa. Have been collecting a lot of extras for the Tamiya kit over the years (PE set, aluminium barrel, Friuls etc) so it should quite a build.
Captured vehicles always intrigue me. Of my recent models, here’s what I’ve built:
Tamiya Willys Jeep: captured by Germans in Italy, repainted: later, recaptured by US 82nd AB in Normandy
Tamiya Char B1 Bis: used by Germans in Channel Islands; redesignated as Panzer B2
DML M3 GMC backdated to T-12 75mm GMC, captured from US forces in Philippines, reused by IJA and KOd by US troops in Luzon
Su-57 half-track: Lend Lease 57mm Gun Motor Carriage, given to Russians. Several captured by Wehrmacht. US encountered one in Czech at war’s end, in 3 tone camouflage
On the workbench:
Firefly VC, direct vision: captured from the Canadians and repainted and reused by German troops
8.8cm Pak 43: captured and repainted by US arty unit.
Marder I SPG: captured by Belgian resistance: marked with white stars, Belgian flag and resistance logos
I’ll try to get moving along on some of these latter 3 projects!
