Better Place to buy Inkjet Water Slide decal paper.

Tonight I tried to order decal paper from decalpaper.com and was very disappointed in the shipping fee and method of shipping. They want to charge same price for shipping as the 10 pack paper costs and only offer UPS service as the only shipping method.

Well, I went inkjet (Decal) paper hunting and found this place http://www.papillio.com/ HPC LLC based in Texas, while their paper is about .50 cents more ( $8.98 for 10 sheets 8.5x11 ) they also offer Post Office shipping as well as UPS shipping. Postal rate being the cheaper method. Comparing pricing and shipping at $13.93 total ($8.98+$4.95 USPS shipping) at papillio.com and decalpaper.com at $17.00 total, ($8.50+$8.50 UPS Shipping ONLY) which I feel was a ripoff on the shipping cost, I ordered from papillio.com instead. Saving $5.00 deniero in the process. Better deal there. I recommend it.

WTG Air. It’s always good to look around, you never know what you will find [:D]

Thanks Bud,

Just seemed like a better deal with lower shipping cost using USPS shipping. I’m pretty sure the paper is good quality and will server me well in my custom decal endevours. Still cheaper than the Testors decal paper too.

Cool and I know what you mean about shiping costs. I was looking about a month ago or so for a Touch-N-Flow Applicator and Micro-Mark is selling one for 6.70 and the shiping for one would be 8.00 and something. What a RIP OFF !

Hey do most decal papers require you to clear coat the printed images before using the decals? I have some paper from bare metal foil and it works fine, but you have to spray clear over the image after its dry or the ink smears when you try and use it.

Drew,

Inkjet decal paper does require a clear coat to seal the ink on the carrier film. Laser printer decal paper doesnt because it does not use ink.

Thanks for the info , i’ve been curiouse about making my own decals .[tup]

I noticed that HobbyLobby has two types of decal paper for Inkjet Printers next to the model paint and BMF. The price was about nine dollars and with the 40% off coupon this could be the best deal.

Yes, you are talking about the Testors Decal paper which they sell for $9.99 regular price with 40% off may be the better deal however, they only sell 10 half sheets 5.5 x 8.5 when I can get 10 sheets 8.5 x 11 full sheets, cut them in half and get 20 half sheets for less money, shipping not included. I feel the better deal is in buying full size 8.5 x 11 decal sheets and getting more for less. This is really the better deal. Two 10 packs of Testors decal paper will cost over $15.00 even if you do get 40% off at Hobby Lobby they only apply it 1 item. So you have ask yourself what is better… 10 sheets 5.5 x 8.5 of Testors Decal paper at $9.99 or buying 10 sheets of 8.5 x 11 for $8.98 plus shipping and getting twice the paper?

The only difference is in the shipping cost of buying your decal paper online but it’s a better deal in the long run. Your still saving money and getting good quality decal paper. I just chose the lesser of two evils.[:D]

I bought some laser-paper from Bare-metal (http://www.bare-metal.com/).
I recall being quite please with their prices. They also sell inkjet paper.

I actually went to kinkos today and printed a logo on this paper for the first time.
I will try it tonight.

I sealed it with microscale liquid decal film ($2.50 at bare-metal) per
the supplied instructions

Hawk,

I checked into Bare Metal’s web site and I honestly can’t see buying 3 inkjet decal sheets for $7.00 plus shipping. I got my sample sheets today from Bel Decal http://www.decalpaper.com they sent free of charge and right away reconized it’s the same quality decal paper Testors sells in the 10 pk half sheets and printed my custom decals for my bug. They look awesome! Later tonight or tomorrow I will spray them with a clear coat to seal the ink. I hope the ink doesn’t run or bleed this time. Wish me luck!

What kind of clear coat do you use? is it made just for decal paper? Do you use special software? Is it good for all colors? Sorry, but I know nothing about making my own decals but I am interested.

Hi Tony,

First. I use a PC program called Jasc’s Paint Shop Pro, this is a photo/image editor and redering program. Some folks here prefer to use Adobe Photoshop which is basicly the same type program. I use PSP to create or edit images I plan to make decals from. Next I use another program called Surething Decal Maker Standard, this is the program you will make your template for decals and print from.

There are two kinds of waterslide decal paper, inkjet printer and laser printer decal paper. Inkjet decal paper needs to be sprayed over with an acrylic spray to seal and bond the ink otherwise it will run and bleed when dipped in water, Krylon Krystal Klear spray is what the makers recommend but you can use almost any clear acrylic spray. You can print any color on injet decal paper but white. For printing decals that have white you need to use white background decal paper. There is also clear background decal paper for printing decals. The type decal you print determines the type decal paper to use. Laser printer decal paper does not requirer any sealer spray coat since it does not use ink to print.

Hope this help you. If you need more information dont hesitate to look up online tutorals about how to make decals on an Inkjet Printer.

Here are the custom laser-printer decals I applied today (see the tail):

The model is shiny from the final glosscoat. Weathering and dullcoat manana

Thanks for the tips above. I’ll look into those vendors.

Excellent job on both model and decals!

Thanks.

It is my first model with an airbrush and acrylic paints.
Very fun and challanging. The decals were made in Photoshop.

I will be finishing it in the next couple days probably.

Thanks for the info. I’ll try to find a tutorial.[D)]
