Up until recently, I have been using my trusty Duro brand oils for washes, thinning them with Mineral Spirits. As a couple of my favorite colors are drying up, I bought some Wnsor and Newton brand oils. I tried thinning them with the mineral spirits, but they do not seem to agree very well. I bought some oderless turpenoid, but that does not work at all.
I base coat with Tamiya acrylics, and seal them in with Polly Scale clears. Can anyone recommend a good thinner for the W & N oils, that would not attack the acrylics underneath? TIA!
Odd, I’ve used regular ol’ everyday mineral spirits with many brands of oils including W&N without issue.
Ditto that. Mineral spirits is the thinner of choice for most people using oil washes as far as I can tell, and it doesn’t attack acrylics.
The stuff that’ssold by the gallon in the hardware store labeled “PAINT THINNER.”
Hey Frank,
Been using OMS also with great results. I just use the brand they have at Wal Mart, not sure who exactly makes it without checking, but it seems like your run of the mill OMS.
Brian
I’ve used a generic Hardware Brand of Mineral spirits for years with Winsor & Newton oils & never had a problem. If you are thinning them for a wash, they do require a lot of stirring however.

Thanks for chiming in everyone! Not sure what the issue is with my paints, perhaps a bad tube of oils?
You don’t explainexactly what is happening with your oils.If they are clumpy and grainy, you may have bought “student” quality, i.e., less expenssive paints. The pigments are larger, which is okay for a canvas, but you should get artist quality. They are worth the extra cost.
What color were you using? If it was something along the lines of Payne’s Grey or Burnt Umber and you are getting sediment then I get this too. I believe it is just the heavier pigments in the oil coming out of suspnesion quicker. All it needs is another quick stir.
If this is not the case perhaps you can describe what is wrong? Might help us try and remedy the problem.
Brian
AJ- Thank you for clarifying that, I did not know there were student and artist quality. I bought what the local craft store had, which turns out to be the student quality from checking your link. Is there a good online source for the artist quality colors?
Brian- I am using black and burnt umber. With the Duro oils, there was a bit of sediment but a quick stir would remedy that. These student quality oils clump into tiny blobs (for lack of a better word) and will not mix completely. I get a partially mixed wash which leaves clumps of pigment in places.
Hey Frank… howsit hangin’?
When I mix my oils I also use the cheap thinner. I always will add just a few drops at a time at the beginning because it is easier the mix that in and keep the mix smooth. When it start to get more thin than a cohesive glob, I will add larger amounts of thinner 'til I get what I want. no clumps.
Thanks Marc for chiming in! All’s well here, how is that Target building going for ya? Sure do hope to see another winged thingie from your bench sometime!
ajlafleche- Thank you, I am going to order a couple of tubes and see if that solves my problem. Appreciate the help!
