I’m george. The new TV series “Greatest Tank Battles” on the Military Channel has inspired me to build some armor, but I haven’t bought or built any armor in 40 years. I want to build the German WWII Sturmtiger heavy assault mortar in 1/35 scale. I see 3 kits to choose from: Tamiya, Italeri and Revell Germany. Which would you suggest as the all-around “best” kit? And how about the “best” aftermarket stuff too?
I bought the Tamiya kit years ago, still not built it yet. Its a very good kit and seeing as you havne’t built armour for so long, you might want to start with that. The best AM for that would be the Aber PE set, but it could be very daunting if you haven’t used PE before.
Thanks for the reply. That’s a fine looking model. So far, people have been unanimous about the AFV Club kit, so I guess I’ll go with it. No one has even mentioned the Revell kit…is the Revell model pretty much a joke?
Like many Revell of Germany kits, unless it is a modern Bundeswehr vehicle, it is normally a rebox of Italeri or Dragon. The Revell kit is the Italeri kit.
The AFV is the better kit, but the Tamiya one is respectable. I have been working on that one here and there for six or seven years-it’s a classic Shelf Queen-but only because I have modeler’s ADHD and when something shiny crosses in front of me, I lose what I’m doing. The Cavalier set is beautiful for the Tamiya kit.
The Italeri looks respectable when finished. It doesn’t come with mesh grills. It does have molded zimmerit that isn’t great by any stretch. There is a bit of puttying…At least it looks the part. LOL
