What’s the best commercial filter for olive drab in your opinion? Also, please describe your preferred shade of olive drab, so I know exactly where you’re coming from.
I’m a bit overwhelmed by the massive selection of filters, all of which have vague, highly subjective labels. For example, “Tan for Yellow Green Filter”. What qualifies as yellow green?
With so many shades and Federal Standard numbers of Olive Drabs out there, it’s impossible to say which is the best. It all depends on what works for you and the subject you’re working on.
I use Mig Productions P245 Brown for Dark Green.It imparts a brown hue which I like.But,that’s just me.
I’m planning on doing a decent amount of color modulation or zenith highlighting, would P245 still be good for that? I’m not sure how “dark” the green will be.
I prefer creating my own washes using W&N and MIG oils. By so doing I can create million different shades and choose one that looks most pleasing to me.
I’m planning on getting some Abteilung oils, but I currently am just trying to stock up on some other painting/weathering items. A commercial filter is the least expensive, at least from a short-term standpoint.
A 30ml MIG filter costs about $8 and a tube of MIG oil paint costs about $7.
With a tube of oil paint and odorless paint thinner, you can create way more than 3,000ml of a filter.
I guess my point is especially with OD there are so many shades and choices that you need to experiment,as was said mix your own,there is no definitive answer.

To be able to mix my own filters to whichever shade desired would require more than one bottle of paint. If I just buy one bottle, then I’m still going out on a limb as far as color goes. I’m considering buying a set, but I don’t know if I’m going to get one just yet.
I don’t know, I’m just going to think about it for a little and then decide.
