So I’m trying to figure this whole washing thing out. I see guys using artist oil. I’ve seen enamels used. And today I spoke with a co-worker who uses craft paint! I know everyone will have a favorite but what I want to know is what are the pros and cons of using the different types?
I tried to make a wash with some cheap artist oil and paint thinner and it didn’t really torn out like I hoped. I will be trying some craft paint what I already have just to see if it works. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Good artist oil (e.g., Winsor & Newton) + Mona Lisa mineral spirits.
Humbrol enamel paint and enamel thinner. Same as MIG washes.
Chops, did you first put a gloss coat on whatever you were using the wash on? This is pretty much a must-do imo.
I use a custom water based type mix applied over a lacquer gloss coat.

I probably fill that container you see next to the ink with 1/3 ink and 2/3 water with a drop ir two of dish soap added to break that surface tension. Hobby Lobby carries several different colors of this type of non-waterproof ink. I can do the entire craft and let it completely dry and remove it using a slightly dampened q-tip or a small folded square of tissue. I have washed at least 5 builds using the batch in the smaller container and its not even half empty. The bottle of ink runs less than 3 bucks at Hobby Lobby and with a 40% off coupon even less than that!!
On armor, I use Winsor and Newton oils like everyone else and usually apply them over an acrylic base.
I put a coat of Pledge on the model before doing the wash. I think the thinner I used just isn’t the right type for the oil paint I have. I will try a different thinner on my next one.
Thanks for the replies!
