Best Paint For Natural Metal Finish?

Hey Guys,

Pretty much what it says above?

I am looking for an all Natural Metal Finish on my 1/48 B-17G and was wondering which is the best to use.

I have always used Model Master Paints, but i am always will to try something different.

Anyway all suggesions welcome.

Tough to beat Alclad II for a great overall appearence.

Wingnut

I seen Alclad being used on a P-51 in one of the group builds, to me then it looked great but thought i would ask around before making a decision.

I have got untill tuesday to make up my mind then it’s off to the LHS.

Nothing looks like metal more than metal…

Have you considered using foil? Very time consuming and tricky but it looks amazing. I’m thinking about doing an American Airlines 777 with it.

‘Bare metal foil’ is great, not only for a metal finish but for masking canopies. that much i know

Wooty, if you are going with Alclad 2 then you may find this article helpful … http://www.swannysmodels.com/Alclad.html

Hey Fellas,

I thought of going for the " Bare Metal Foil " but shyed away after reading a few articals on it.

Besides it is a 1/48 B-17G i am building and there is a lot of plastic to cover with the BMF, think i will stick to paints.

Swanny your web site is a ripper and the Alclad artical will be of geat use.

I have read the site “History OF The B-17” and have been able to read about the all detail sets i am using for this build.

They Include : Squadrons Canopy Sets #1 & #2

True Details Bombardier, Cockpit, Wheels & Waist Gunners Sections.

Eduard Big Ed Set.

Aires M2 .50cal Waist Gun Section.

Aires R-1820 Engine ( on a trolly so people can see what the engine looks like )

Quickboost B-17 Engines.

And Maybe A Paragon Bomb Bay set if i can find one?

Cheers

Robert

The Paragon B-17 sets are great, I have several. Very well cast.

Lucky Bugger,

I have searched everywhere for the Paragon Set and the only place that i have found it at is Hannants, but for a price.

Anyway it depends on how much a person wants it or not?

As for the casting of the sets, i have heard nothing but good reports on them.

The Alclad II system is very good but for a different twist on the NMF, I spray the model with Model Master Gloss Black and then when dry to the touch, I rub in SnJ Aluminum Powder with a Q-Tip. Weathering is kept to a minimum but the finish can be decalled without a gloss coat and the sheen is varied by polishing with a soft cloth until you get the desired results

A great way to do a metal finish is to use Model Master’s Aluminum Non-Buffing Metalizer and Model Master’s Aluminum Plate Buffing Metalizer in a 1:1 mix. Both are classified Metalizer Laquer and already ready for the airbrush. I’ve had great results with it…but I got a the tip from a master!!

I attended a NMF forum at the Nats this year. The gentleman conducting the forum (can’t recall his name) got beautiful results with Floquil silver and SNJ powder. Lots of good methods but some are tricky and/or difficult to use, the Floquil seemd easy to get fool-proof results with.

Another choice if you (like me) prefer using acrylic paints is the Talon line - here is the website:

You may want to investigate this. I have done several nmf aircraft using kitchen foil and Mona Lisa Gold Leaf size as an adhesive. There is a learnign curve, but thge results are well worth the extra effort, IMHO.

I’ll throw my nod in for the Alclad II. I recenlty tried the Polished Aluminum and am very pleased with the result:

Wooty, I use Alclad II… No polishing, no buffing. The only downside is you have to buy paints for each individual shade. But it’s very easy to apply, just airbrush it on.

Max… while that is true, and until I finish my supply of all the different colors of Alclad I have [;)], I will keep doing that, there is another different method to get a panel color variation. You can also get a variation in tone by masking off panels and laying down different colors, like black and grays, before spraying the Alclad.

Duh, I forgot all about that. I read something on the forum about that, you can even use white and reds and yellows to get different shades!

Best and the least expensive is to use Floquil Old silver with Testors Metalizers .The Metalizers as various panels with non-Buff color last.Seal with a good gloss or seme-Matt finish.Graphite powder can be Buffed in to creat special effects.Metal finish the natural award winning way.
