Best M577?

Our club is doing a group build for Desert Storm. I’m thinking of making the M-577 command track I used as the S-2 of 2ACR at the time.

I found the Tamiya 1/35 scale model. Is there a better one?

Tamiya’s the only one I’ve seen. Might want to check eBay.

When I was in FDC, named our “Safety Pup” after the dog on the side of kids milk cartons in the early 1990s. We had a collection of these cartons lining the back on the track and had it sencilled on the side.

Tamiya’s is the only one and it is an original M577 from the Vietnam era. By ODS, most units had M577A2s. It can be made into an A2 without too much trouble. Best bet is to get an Academy M113A2 and use the Tamiya M577 parts on it. You can see how I did it here, modifying the Tamiya hull as opposed to using the Academy one. And the completed model.

More here.

Good luck.

Like Richard says, it is the only one out there. I would, however, grab the Academy M113A2 kit and just mate the Tamiya M577 top with the base Academy kit. You would get a more up-to-date, better detailed and accurate vehicle than the ancient Tamiya kit alone.

Most of them I saw in the Army had the rubber track skirts taken off, but left the driver’s front metal shirt still on since it had a step cut in it. The driver used this to climb up with. Also a lot had the angled steel, that held this rubber shirt, bolted back onto the hull.

Gino and Rob gave you the straight skinny… Just had to comment…

Gino &.the brown towel returns !!! [;)]

Rounds Complete!!

Classic.

Yup, the good ol’ Army Brown Towel, one each, individual. Gotta love them. That brings back fond memories of 120 degree heat and sand everywhere…incoming drills…snipers… OK, maybe not too fond. It was still good times though.

Would that be the “water repellent” brown towel?! They were usually on the shelf next to the army brown underwear.

I feel sorry for the little Iraqi and Kuwaiti kids who are gonna be digging up my nasty old drawers out of the desert for years!!
