I’d like to add a Concorde to my collection. What is the best Concorde kit in 1/72 and 1/144? I’m assuming the Revell 1/144 kit is out…I’ve heard it has really poor fit.
The fit won’t matter much if you build a diorama of a charred mangled hotel with pieces of the Concorde scattered about. I haven’t even seen the Revell kit around lately.
I built the old Airfix kit a long time ago and liked it. The new big one looks cool, except it will take up alot of space.
Is that supposed to be funny?
I built the 1/144 version several years ago, and the windshield did not look right no matter what I did. I would go with the bigger kit. Its a relatively small aircraft. I saw one upclose on the tarmac at JFK when an Airfrance flight of mine had to transfer airplanes. I couldn’t believe how small it was in person.
One of the safest commercial aircraft ever. Tens of thousands of flights and the only single crash a result of debris on the runway from another plane.
Kind of a really big Mirage, my Dad always said. I’ve seen them up close as well, and they are small. Sort of like a Vulcan. The engineers fought like hell not to have windows, but couldn’t sell it to the owners.
There was a really nice magazine article several years back with what-if liveries for all of the airlines that expressed interest. I’ll try to find it. G-BOAD had Singapore Airlines on the port and BA on the starboard in 1980, kind of cool.
Yeah it was supposed to be funny but it didn’t go anywhere. I like building crash dioramas (mostly of WWII a/c). It seemed funny to me at the time. I apologize if you weren’t amused.
The Revel kit in 1:72 is a fairly good fit, although watch out for the nose/visor mechanism as its very brittle. The kit also has some aftermarket too - Airwaves resin wheels and tyres, Extratech photo etch and newwear paint masks. Panel fit is not that great - it is a retooling of the old Airfix kit
While I have the Heller boxing of the Airfix 1/72 kit (which is also the Revell kit) I hear the fit is far from fair. Most of the builds I have seen have had issues with joining the forward and rear fuselage sections. The engine assemblies also have issues with gaps/steps when fitting to the wing. Expect a lot of filling and sanding work. If you are fussy about shape issues then there are plenty with the kit as well, from the cockpit visor tot he position of the wings on the fuselage. There are some very informative build threads around the web on other forums that show these issues and in some cases how to correct them.I will build mine and do the best I can with it when I get around to it. For the best Concorde kit in the scales you asked the Revell 1/144 kit is the way to go. You might also want to consider the Doyusha/Nitto 1/100 kits which are quite nice as well.
