hey modellers. as the title says, i’m wondering what the best BF-109 is in terms of building ease and accuracy. i would assume a goos first choice would be one of the tamiya offerings. but lately, i have started to buy more hasegawa kits, and i would like to try one of their 109’s with a figure included. what has the experience been like for others?
Assuming you mean the E variants, I think it’s a toss up between Hasegawa & Tamiya. The Tamiya has slightly better fit & detail, while the Hasegawa is arguably more accurate in shape. For later versions, Hasegawa all the way.
I’m hearing that the BF109F by Zvesda is the best out there. Fujimi does a K4 about as good as anybody, but their “G” has some issues in the panel lines mostly. The Hasegawa’s are slightly better, but not three times the price better (not even twice the price better for that matter). Anyway the rumor mill has Zvesda comming out with a “G” and and “E” in the near future.
I hate “Best” threads… It’s kinda subjective… For low price and detail that’s on par with many more expensive kits, the Revell Bf 109G is kinda hard to beat, IMHO…
the nice thing about the Fujimi kit is all the options you have, but the downside is rescribing the panel lines if you want a “G”. If memory is corect you can also build an “AS” model as well as a Jabo (not a real good Jabo but still one). My only complaint about the kit is the propeller blades look a little thin on the “K” model, but then again maybe it’s just me
Keep in mind it was 1970s tech, so you won’t find any PE in it… It’s not needed anyway, IMHO. Also, in the FWIW Department, Revell’s 1/48th Spitfire Mk II from about '78 is also a fine example and a good companion piece (if you can find it)… IIRC, it has a mix of raised and engraved panel lines and the cockpit is fairly complete and well-detailed, but it does leave room for some scratchbuilding, like the RAF Sutton Harness, but I’d recommend vac-forming canopy for it if you want the hood open, and you’ll need to cut the access door out and add some detail to it as well… If I remember right, the door is pre-scored where the cuts need to be made… Last time I saw it, about a year ago in a dusty corner of my LHS, it was running at about 16.00… Shoulda bought it them, as it was gone when I went back a couple days later…
I got one of my Zevzda 109’s last week, and it’s at the top of the pecking order! Everything just looks right, and now hear that a 109F4 is in the wings! This kit cost me $30, and compaired to the others, it’s a no contest. But the Fujimi can almost always be had for $10 or less on Ebay
