Best 1/350 U-boat?

Who’s making the best 1/350 U-boat these days? I’ve seen the Revell kit floating around for around $7, but at that price, something’s gotta be wrong with it. Anybody know if there’s aftermarket for that kit? If not, is there a strong kit that can be had $15-$20? AFV Club’s got some good looking sub kits. What about that 1941 Gato kit? Somebody school me. I need a WW2 sub in my collection.

Thanks!

Chris

The Revell kit actually has superior surface detailing to the Bronco and Hobby Boss 1/350 U-boats. I have all in my stash and built both a Revell VIIC and Hobby Boss VIIA. I am pretty sure that there is some PE available for it, but straight OOB, it builds up very nicely!

Here they are together, Hobby Boss Type VIIA on the left, Revell Type VIIC on the right

You can look here for more pics of both boat builds

Nice! Thanks Stik!

Ended up picking up that VIIC today. Looks like a nice little kit! Hull went together pretty well. Looks like it’ll be a pretty quick build.

yeah I built mine in an hour or so… then spent a lot more hours on masking, painting and weathering…

I’ve done two u-boats and two gato class subs by afv club and aside from very tiny parts which are a bit too hard to handle, i think they build well to nice subs.

These are nice little kits, and are beautiful builds! Have any of you seen those nice 1/400 U-Boats by Mirage? Although there is very little weld or seam detail, they do explore the many variants of the Type II’s, VII’s, and IX’s and make a very interesting collection.

Thank you Bill. Yes I have seen them. A LHS has them in stock. But between Revell Germany, Bronco, AFVClub and HobbyBoss, I have all the Type VIIs and IXs covered in 1/350…
