Bede BD-5 & BD-J

Something a little different for me. A pair of 1/72 scale BD-5s. These things are tiny.
The BD-J is on the left, the BD-5B is on the right. I used Warbird Decals seat belts in them.

Those are awesome!

Nice!

The Bd-5 has always been a minor obsession of mine! I would love to fly one someday.

How did they go together? Any issues?

I have 2 sets of these little birds in my stash, I suspect they are the same kit.

Any idea how you will paint them?

I’ll be following this thread. Just got a BD-5 kit recently from a friend.

I was a member of EAA at the time the 1:1 size kit became available. Delayed a bit and the Vari-Eze kits came out and I went to that instead, but still think the -5 was a beautiful aircraft.

Ditto on what Don said,

Except I don’t have one to call my own. Have flown the actual bird. All I can say is Awesome LITTLE Bird!

They are pretty simple kits. Fit is about average, a little seam sanding is needed. The elevators don’t fit exactly square so a little filler is needed if you align them properly. Ironically one is skewed one direction and the other is opposite. They look like the same part but have different numbers. (Maybe I should have swapped them…?)

The instructions call out for 1 gram of weight in the nose, but even using lead there is only room for about 1/2 gram, but that seems to be enough to make them nose heavy.

I cut the pitot tubes off the noses and will replace them with wire.

I’ll do them as shown on the box art using the kit decals.

Kool !

Never did fly the Bede. And never finished my Vari-eze- costs got to high and wife canceled project. Did get a chance to fly a friend’s Vari-eze (from back seat) on flight from Jeff City to St. Louis.

Here’s one I 3D printed. everyting was scratch built, decals came from Draw decals. I printed it at 1/32 scale.

I still have the 1973 Popular science magazine where I first saw it

John

That’s awesome!

Beautiful!

Great job on the Silver Bullet John! That came out great. How did you make the canopy?

I thought I might have been able to mask off the cockpit like I usually do with other 1/72 planes when I started, but it turns out the easier way was to ditch that work and I’ll hand paint and re-decal the harnesses after shooting the white. (Good thing the Warbird sheet provides a lot of belts.) I was able to hold them by the interior with tweezers for painting too.
I used Tamiya Fine White primer to check my bodywork and provide an even base, and then shot some decanted TS-26 Pure White for the color.

I painted some wood grain onto the prop.

I repainted the interiors and replaced the seatbelts. The prop version gets red stabilizers.

Will the jet version get folding wings and a trailer with a fake horse rump? [:P]

No, from Bond. James Bond.

No, from Bond. James Bond.

”Fill her up, please.”

Gonna have to watch that again. I do recall the fill 'er up part and the hanger fly through.
