Guys, I am not a scratch builder by any means. I do however have a little something I would like to make. I have an aircraft with a round sensor under a clear cover. The model does not have the round sensor under the clear, just the clear cover. The sensor could basically be just a perfect sphere in which I could cut a 1/4 out of to mount in place. How would I make this? I tried taking a piece of spree, heating it and then trying to form it into a ball. That didn’t work. How would one acomplish this? Thanks.

It depends what size you want. I have some dress making pins with a round plastic ball on the end. it pulls off easily & comes in handy for just what you’re doing. They are about 3/16 ths of an inch in diameter.
OR, ball bearings? drill a small depression into the model surface & superglue into place. OR, a small ball of filler, rolled between the palms of your hands.
Think laterally, when scratch building, anything & everything becomes a potential part of a model!

I was reading a post the other day where a ship builder said he gets an assortment of small spheres by melting solder. He melted them close to a safe surface and after they cooled he selects the right size.
Craft stores sometimes have small wooden spheres, also different size (and color) beads for kids to make necklaces out of. Check your wifes jewlery box (heh,heh), chicks always have junk jewlery you might use; got some nice tow cable for 1/35 tank that way.

You could try Sculpey clay or Fimo clay. These are plastic clays that you heat in the oven until hard. Both are cheaply available in Artists’ supply stores. You’d simply roll the sphere until perfectly round, then heat in the oven. Finally, cut off the top quarter, and sand and paint.

[:)]Try craft store Dana. They have plastic beads of all sizes and shapes. Just pick the size you want, a little dremel work and paint. They also have clear.
Thanks guys. I actually already found the solution. I simply cut the aircraft some to accept an entire sphere and CA a BB in there. After painting and all, it looks pretty good.
